"Carol M. Burrell" ( On another line: How _do_ native speakers of Welsh feel about "outsider's" ) interest in learing their language? ... Is it seen as an intrusion (like the ( sterotypical Parisian view of non-natives butchering French), are outside ) people looked upon as wannabes trying to partake of a culture they might view ( as quaint? Well, you cannot generalise you know; you will find that many people are very positive about it. For myself I suppose it depends why the person wants to learn Welsh. I am as disappointed as I can manage with anyone who moves into a Welsh speaking part of Wales (or Argentina, I suppose -- incidentally the only place you're likely to find people over school age who speak only Welsh, and not many of them either) without making an effort to fit in; the flip-side of that must necessarily be being encouraging to someone who does want to "join in". There is a bit of an industry in being encouraging to learners in Wales these days, so I suppose it is safe to generalise a bit from this. On the other hand it does get a bit wearing forever meeting (if the real Californians will forgive me) californian mystics and the like who think that learning a few words of Welsh is an essential part of the lifestyle of a reborn celtic wizard. g
