I have no Welsh myself, but am collecting Welsh wordlist, with frequency of occurrence, to reset the Welsh module of our product Hyphenologist, which splits words in 43 to 50 languages depending on how you count languages. It is not going too well at the moment, as WELSH-L has only provided 3000 words, in mixed charater set, in two months. There is not enough text *in Welsh*. When the wordlist reaches some 20,000 words, with frequency of occurrence, I will stop. I will then offer it, with Public Domain, C source code utilities, instructions, and documentation, on WELSH-L and soc.culture.celtic. For spelling error correctors one needs 50,000 to 100,000 words. The same job on GAELIC_L recovered 28,000 words and was passed over to Wade Shen . I would hope that eventually it would be offered to Paul Leyland, who maintains an archive of wordlists in many languages on that machine. If anyone has large amounts of Welsh text it would speed the job up no end. The rule for collecting word lists is "As many subjects, and authors as possible". The classic word list, the Brown Corpus, used 500 blocks of text each 2000 words long, from many genre. That is 1,000,000 words, or about 10 MBytes of text. One or two MBytes from each person would be perfect. Newspapers, and Electronic newspapers, if accented, are perfect, but I have found non on the net. For my own purposes I do not require accented characters, but others clearly need accented characters. Character set is difficult as WELSH-L uses a mixture, of unaccented and with accents marked in several ways. I work on a PC and can edit most things to a consistent character set. That is _provided_ that I know what how accented characters are represented. Anybody interested?? Please do not send me large amounts of email, as I have a limit of 2.5mBytes per month, after which it costs a lot. I would prefer text, by mail on PC 1.44 MByte disks, possibly pkziped, but ask! I can accept many things.
