Thank you to everyone who sent encouraging words after my last communication, 'My hen laid a haddock'. I think I have replied to everyone who sent messages. I was, I confess, a little disappointed at not hearing from anyone in Wales so I though I should be a little more specific. As I mentioned previously I am doing a research project on how/why people stop speaking Welsh and I documenting the process in my own family. I shall be in Wales in July and part of August, based in Cardiff. I hope to chase up information about my great grandfather, Pedr Hir who I believe wrote a grammar and guide to Welsh as well as numerous hymns. I also want to find out about my grandfather Master's thesis, which he wrote at Cardiff University early this century and which, I believe, was about Welsh literature. (His name was Watcyn Uthur Williams). I do need to be in contact with an appropriate person at Cardiff University in order to get access to the library and so on. I wondered if there is a subscriber to the list who either is the person I need or knows who is?! I shall also be travelling around Wales and I would very much like to hear from anyone who is interested in meeting to discuss some of the issues I am dealing with, language loss/identity/modernity. Also, I should be interested in references to any relevant studies. I am aware of a number of American PhD theses on similar themes but it is difficult to get hold of them here in Australia and I thought someone in Wales might be collecting a stash of them? Anyway, I am happy to say that I have now encountered two Welsh-speakers in Perth and am busy learning from videos, books and tapes and even the dog is picking it up a bit. ('Tyd yma' and 'paid' which may be spelled wrongly because they're things I remember from childhood and have never seen written down.) However I must confess I'm confused by the fact that there seem to be at least three ways of saying I am (R wyf, R wi'n, Dwi'n). I'll just mumble I guess.
