Roger asks Does anyone have a short description of the orthography of Breton and Cornish that can be posted here? It's much more interesting (even if not much more useful) to have some idea of the pronunciation of posts in these languages. Historically Cornish orthography can be divided into three areas. The medieval period extends up to around the year 1500. Modern or Late Cornish from 1500 to 1900. Twentieth century Cornish. There is a considerable difference between the spelling systems of medieval and Late Cornish. In the twentieth century, there are three systems in common usage. Unified Cornish is a standardised and simplified orthography based on the medieval period. Common Cornish is a standardised phonemic orthography based on a hypothetical reconstruction of the phonology of medieval Cornish. Modern Cornish uses the orthography of the Late or Modern Cornish era. Jon Mills
