As someone who has dealt with this sort of thing on the receiving end ... find out what the total bill will be (including shipping) _in_pounds_, go to your local bank and purchase an international money order _in_pounds_ for that amount, and sent _that_. You can estimate all you like, but while the check is in the mail the exchange rate could fluctuate wildly, and you have no idea what the recipient's bank might charge him/her to change your dollars at the other end.
