Gwynfor Evans in Land of My Fathers relates the story that one night in 1856 a wool merchant named Evan James was walking along the banks of the Rhondda in Pontypridd and was so inspired he wrote the words. His son James James who worked with his father wrote the melody to his father's words and called it Glanrhondda. The book contains a photo of the original manuscript with music and text.
