Hello (neu "hylo" yn hytrach. Dydy fy Nghymraeg yn rhy dda, ac o'r herwydd 'ma fydda i ddim yn sgrifennu yn yr iaith y mae'r rhestr yn fwy hoff ohoni. Esgusodwch fi.), I'm a graduate student in linguistics in Buffalo, New York. I'm interested in certain distinctions in the Welsh pronominal system. Rather [excuse that last word. I'd go back and change it, but my editor won't let me move up a line.] In traditional grammatical terms, or at least those preferred by Stephen J. Williams, what I am interested in are the "conjunctive",and "reduplicative" pronouns, and the construction in which an ordinary independent pronoun is preceded by an article. Lest these terms be unfamiliar to those of you who don't happen to have just put down a Welsh grammar, I've found a nice pronominal syzygy in the Kate Roberts story "Prynu Dol" which illustrates the distinctions nicely. (or "well". Damn editor.) O syllu a syllu a dal i syllu, fe welodd *hyhi* ei hun yn y ddol. *y hi* ei hun yn saith oed, pan gafodd dynnu ei llun am y tro cyntaf erioed, a rhyw olwg hanner trist, hanner swil arni, golwg plentyn diniwed. Aeth y ddol yn fyw, ac yn debycach iddi hi ei hun: ni fedrai *hithau* ddal yr olygfa. [roughly: "After staring (gazing?) and staring and continuing to stare, she saw *herself* in the doll. *She* herself at seven years old, when she had her picture taken for the first time ever, some look half sad, half shy on her face, the look of an innocent child. The doll was coming alive, and more like her herself: *she* could not bear the sight(?)."] If you know where I can find literature on the asterisked forms, or if you'd like to enlighten me yourself, please send me a message at the address below. Incidentally, I'm not looking for the description of these forms in the current reference grammars; I have those of Jones and Gareth King at my disposal. I'm more interested in native speaker impressions of how these pronouns are used or journal articles on them, scholarly or otherwise. Diolch ymlaen llaw, David Houghton v228wysn@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu
