As I write the following message, I am in good spirits. I am not feeling the least bit angry or vindictive, so please don't interpret the following as a "flame". I think the "Anthony"s of the world who pronounce their name ANTH-ony rather than ANT-ony are perfectly correct. I myself have the English surname "Houghton", which, according to the traditions of English orthography, might be pronounced some 8 or 9 different ways. The English pronounce the "ough" in this surname as in "bought", whereas the members of my family pronounce it as in "though". No doubt, some ignorant ancestor of mine or his ignorant neighbors introduced the latter pronunciation. Nevertheless, I don't think any partisan of the "bought" "ough" has the right to correct our pronunciation of our name. David Houghton (the "ugh" is silent)
