Can anyone give me numbers - even very rough figures will do - of the numbers of pupils receiving Secondary level schooling through the medium of Welsh? A report was produced recently by HM Inspectors of Schools in Scotland, "Provision of Gaelic Education in Scotland". While the report contains many good proposals which if acted upon will help the Gaelic language, the most startling and alarming recommendation in the report is that there should be essential *no* Secondary level teaching through the medium of Gaelic, except perhaps for "cultural" courses involving music, theatre, etc. The tone of the report practically suggests that the few schools already teaching a few subjects through Gaelic should stop doing this: "We therefore conclude that the provision of Gaelic-medium secondary education in a number of subjects determined by the vagaries of resource availability, is neither desirable nor feasible in the foreseeable future." (1.12) This is precisely at the time when the first puplis from the Gaelic medium schools and units set up seven years ago are now reaching Secondary level. The report makes no reference to Ireland or to Wales or to why Secondary education is possible in these languages but not in Scottish Gaelic. We have til the end of this month to offer comments on the report: "The Secretary of State has invited comments on the report and its recommendations. These should be addressed to Mr Douglas Millar, Scottish Office Education Department, Room 612, 43 Jeffrey Street, Edinburgh EH1 3DG" [fax +44 31 244 4785] Dioch yn fawr, Caoimhi/n O/ Donnai/le
