>I'm a complete beginner in Welsh, and fairly new to this list. Can anyone >tell >me whether it's the North Wales or South Wales dialect which is spoken in the >Welsh media? Does it just depend on where the speaker/writer comes from? Well here goes my first posting to this list: Television tends to use the southern dialect, and the Western Mail also tends to follow this usage (The Western Mail being a Welsh national newspaper). More localised media will tend to cater to their readers/ listeners. Radio Ceredigion uses the mid Wales dialect (more or less southern) whereas radio stations and papers further north will use the gog^H^H^H northern dialect.
