this actually gets into a long-standing sociolinguistics conumdrum about whether language influences thought or thought influences language. will using 'Ms.' change the way one feels about women? will saying 'hearing impaired' invoke better feelings than 'deaf'? i used to work for a company where the managers wanted us to use the word 'opportunity' instead of the word 'problem', so that we would start to see every problem as a chance to make things better. i do think though that having exposure to as much welsh as possible can be important to the status of welsh. if it developes the status of a foriegn langauge for most of wales, it will surely not survive. tom mcclive tommcc@email.unc.edu
