I am planning to start learning one of these days, perhaps this fall. My parents both spoke quite fluently, but always used Yiddish as the language of choice to discuss adult matters, and so went out of their way to discourage me from learning it. Now, 30-something years on, I'm hoping to be able to rectify that error! I'd be interested in receiving your digest, though if its contents are all in Yiddish I may give up somewhere along the way. Depends on how the course goes. Can you suggest additional materials that are helpful to a beginner? I know at least some of the standard expressions that have entered the vernacular, of course, and I read Hebrew (though not easily if the vowels are omitted). [I've recommended Weinreich's College Yiddish. Anyone have further suggestions for him? -- DS] ------------------------ Digest-Message: 31/4 Date: Sat, 22 Sep 90 23:57:00 EDT From: Subject: poem I am sending along a poem in Yiddish. It is out of a Machzor published by Temple Beth Or, P.O. Box 160081, Miami, Florida 33116, copyright Rabbi Rami Shapiro, Ph.D. I presume the accompanying translation is by Rami Shapiro, but I wonder about the poem. It is beautiful, and I wonder where I can find more like it. Does anyone know? Here it is. Gevalt sh-brider vos shloft ir; S'iz shoin tzait tzu zogen tilim, gein davenen, gein lernen, zain yiden! Nisht kain tilim nor geshlogen tzu vos toigst du oif velt? Mit vos vestu kumen oif yener velt? Of course, the obvious thing to do is to write to Rami Shapiro via snail mail, and ask the source. In the meantime, though, the poem can get wider coverage.
