Ihr vet fun mir heren shpeter veil durch dem zumer bin ich nor tsufalig beim "computer". 3)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 18 Jun 91 08:23:32 -0400 From: beatrice@unagi.cis.upenn.EDU Subject: Introduction i'm a linguist interested in the germanic languages, so therefore i'm interested in yiddish. i wrote my doc- toral thesis on the change in the history of yiddish of the position of the tensed verb in subordinate clauses. yiddish subordinate clauses start out by looking pretty much like german ones, but by the time east yiddish has split off from west yiddish and west yiddish has de- clined, they look pretty different. i'm currently working on a further word order change: the order of untensed verbs and their objects. in early yiddish, the order is generally obj-v, but again in modern yiddish, it's the other way around. when did this change happen? how fast did it happen? did it happen both in west and in east yiddish? this is the type of stuff that keeps me up at night. given that i've mostly mucked about in the early yiddish literature, my knowledge of modern yiddish literature is fairliy abysmal, but i'm educable! ______________________________________________________ End of Mendele Vol 1.26
