In the heat of an argument: es zol bay dir vachsen a trolley car in boych! [a trolley car should grow in your stomach! - obviously a 20th-century addition to the language] A gut, gezunt yor un a gut yontif tzu alln. Rick (Ruvn-Mendl) Turkel (rmt51@cas.bitnet) 2)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 20 Sep 91 13:45 EDT From: ZOGUR@CUVMB.BITNET Subject: More I think that "nit do gedakht" should really be "nit opgedakht" [nidOgedakht]. And whadaboud "meshteyns gezogt/imshteyns gezogt/shteyns gezogt' even"nishteyns gezogt". Haven't we been through that one already? Have a good one. Mikhl. 3)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 20 Sep 91 From: nmiller@trincc Subject: Still more Leg zikh avek un shtey shoyn nisht op. Di verem zoln dir oyfesen, riboney-shel-oylem! (This last addition works with just about any klole). Oysgemekt zol er vern. Yemakh shemoy (v'zikhroy) zol er zayn/vern. Me zol shoyn nokh im gebn a nomen. Me zol shoyn nokh ihm zogn kadish. Neyen zol men im takhrikhim. As to the question of _who_ utters these curses, Maurice Samuels only reserves some for women. Here is an example. S'iz shoyn tsayt az zi aleyn zol lign a farfoylte..in eynem mit ir tayern man dem hikevatn un ire tsvey tsekrokhene tekhter vos se shlogt fun zey an ipesh. Melekh: I call 'a gute sho' and 'a mazeldike sho' heterodox because they clearly imply a belief in the power of astral bodies to affect human destiny. This is a big subject and I'm no expert. I know that the zodiac has made its way into Jewish ritual, at least to the extent that one finds it in siddurim and elsewhere, but astrology has always been strongly condemned. Hence. Re: > a brokhe oyf dayn/... kepele: when you/... said or did > something particularly wonderful; My father-in-law uses "a gezunt af dein kepele" with our children. ______________________________________________________ End of Mendele Vol 1.64
