Mein tate vet es nutsn Montik in a Yidishn klas vu er voynt. About 2 or 3 years ago, in preparation for a talk on Jewish humor, I recalled the first four lines of a poem which I learned in elementar shule. These lines stayed with me lo these many years. With the help of my friend Shifra Forman and also by Chane Mlotek of YIVO, I got the remainder of the poem. It has since been a standard with me.It's indicated that it is from a "motif fun S. Please excuse the transliteration and also its lack of consistency. There must be a standard somewhere. If there is, won't someone Email me? BTW, I find in Mendele very little of light, breezy material. I enjoy the serious discussions and the search for information, but it seems to me that there is also room for an entertainment factor. Of course, the general subject matter should be appropriate. However, I'm glad to be here in any event. Dorian (Dovid Moishe) Goldstein 2)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 11 Mar 1995 21:28:48 -0500 (EST) From: ptyaxel@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu Subject: Videramol "gay" Back in 3.243 et seq., the issue of Yiddish terms for 'gay (homosexual)' and the like was tossed about. In the current issue of _Yugntruf_, a list of ca 100 relevant terms, put together by Mordkhe amd Binyumin Schaechter and therefore meriting serious attention, is presented. The list, which emphasizes but is not limited to 'gay' terms, includes: affair di libe/afere AIDS eydz come out ... aro'ysantple'kn zikh consenting adults hasko'medike partners effeminate fartsertlt, farvaybert equal opportunity di glaykhe me'glekhkayt, me'glekhkaytn mit laytn glaykh fall madly in love farlibn zikh biz di o'yern herpes der herpes lesbian (n.) di le'zbierke/lezbianke safe sex der bavornter seks sex (religious/learned) der inyen zokher-nekeyve singles bar di bakenbar venereal disease di vene'rishe krenk The compilers acknowledge that there is not yet a _gerotener_ Yiddish equivalent for 'gay', glossing it provisionally as _homoseksuali'st/-ish_. _Yugntruf_, the journal of "Youth for Yiddish", comes with membership in the organization, whose address is 200 West 72 St--Suite 40, New York NY 10023-2824. Shleyme Axelrod 3)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 10 Mar 1995 10:36:42 EST From: gnmr03a@prodigy.com Subject: Dubner I am trying to find out if anyone ever heard of a shtetl in the Russo/Polish territory called "Dubner." I have never been able to locate it on a map or in any atlas reference volume. My parents came from that territory. It might be the same as the Russian city today called "Dubno." I am not sure. "Help! Who can translate my grandfather's beautiful but challenging writing? His letter, written in 1918, in what may by Judeo-German (German written in Hebrew characters) is stumping Yiddish readers." Renee I would appreciate any suggestions or offers of help. I will get all answers to Renee. Thanks. Linda Cantor [Please send replies to sender.] ______________________________________________________ End of Mendele Vol. 4.366 Mendele has 2 rules: 1.
