I will email all the people who voted...I am sure alot of you will find
this group on your own!

I will begin posting this weekend...I will try to include some articles
and aromatherapy sources..

I would personally like to see this as a "show and tell" list as well as
discussion...I am always interested in what people are doing or making as
far as blends and and other aromatherapy products.

Hi!

My most favorite scent is Sandlewood and I wear it everyday...it always lifts my
spirits. I was wondering what medicinal properties it may have as well?

Thanks!

The proposal for the creation of this group, followed by some debate,
ultimately resulted in objections by mail-admins that frequent alt.config.
This was enough to warrant a pledge to rmgroup any successfully created
aromatherapy group. Therefore, I don't expect this group to remain here
much longer.

What does this mean? If the group was approved & put on the system, why

Actually, this newgroups has been around for a month or more. I noticed,
because I wondered what it was all about.

Would somebody like to volunteer?

Will it explain why wearing the combination of English Leather after shave
and Claiborne cologne is a fantastic attraction to some women? (It really
is!) It works so well that I really have to wonder what they put in it.

Still, I doubt that's what this group is about.

The reason I don't subscribe to a lot of mailing lists is that a lot of
them don't offer the digest format - and I find it nearly impossible to
read through a huge pile of incoming mail and attempt to keep a thread of
thought going.

If the aromatherapy mailing list were available in digest format as well
as bounce format, I'd be more interested.

Meanwhile... alt.aromatherapy continues...

Musk is an animal product.....I don;t use it...but vanilla is very

I think the Vanilla evokes memories of

Does anyone know how to extract essential oils from patchouli root?
I have some roots that I want to get the oils from but I don't really
know how. I don't want to use any nasty chemicals either....thanks

in a potpourri...and go buy some patchouli essential oil...it's cheap

Hi,

I'd like to start a discussion about Rosemary. I've read it is one of the
oldest herbs, that is, it has been a part of folk medicine for a long time.
What do you know about it and where did you find out your info? Interesting
Rosemary stories are welcome too. Please post in the newsgroup.

Thanks,

I'm trying to figure out what ingredients I can use to spontaneously whip
up some scented oil for massages, using kitchen ingredients.

Okay, look. Here's the deal. I walk into a friend's kitchen, and they
have cold-pressed olive oil, a big jug of canola oil, and cold-pressed
safflower oil. There's Schilling/McCormick-brand Pure Vanilla Extract,
Peppermint Extract, Orange Extract, and Almond Extract. The ingredients
on these are:
vanilla bean extractives in water, alcohol (35%), and sugar
alcohol (89%), oil of peppermint, and water
alcohol (80%), water, and oil of orange
water, alcohol 36%, and oil of bitter almond [uh-oh...]

There's also Madeline & Charlotte's Cookbook Vanilla Alcohol Free:
vanilla, glycerin, gum tragacanth, sugar, water, potassium sorbate.

Are any of these safe when combined in suitably diluted proportions on
the skin?

I'd say no, just to be safe. Except for the oils, nothing wrong with that
part - I've used regular old oil before.

I've been dabbling in aromatherapy for a little while and have gotten my
SO interested. He came up with the idea of taking some oil from the
kitchen (cold pressed) and combine it with something pleasant smelling
>from the kitchen. For instance peppermint extract, vanilla etc. And use
it as a massage oil.

The purpose is to bring it together spontaneously at parties.

My first thought was that it wouldn't work, mostly because of the alcohol
content in the extracts. Is there a reason why this would work? Are
there any other reasons that it wouldn't?

yep. consider: alcohol is commonly
used on skin as a base for most perfumes
and scents. humans are something like
95% water already, which leaves you with
the oils. all of the oils you mention
are commonly sold in concentrated form
(i.e., all they have is pure oil of
whatever it is). now: we already know
what percentage of the extracts AREN'T
oil, so you know the oil has already been
diluted. plus, it's safe to put in your
food since it's a food extract.

now, you're going to add those extracts
to oil, which is going to dilute them
even further, so unless your subject is
extremely sensitive, you should be fine.
when in doubt, test some on yourself in
an area of sensitive skin (inside of elbow,
insides of thighs). if you know your
subject has sensitive skin, do the same
thing with them before using it on their
entire back.

there are also some very fine books out
on aromatherapy that list combinations of
scents, what that combination does (some
drive away bugs, some serve to soothe
or energize, etc.), and most importantly
gives you the correct mixture ratio of
essential oil to base oil. i believe it's
something like one drop essential oil to
3-5 tablespoons of base oil, but don't
quote me on it.

depends entirely on who you're working
on. peppermint oil, much like eucalyptus
oil, goes on warm for the first few seconds,
then turns cold and burns (cold fire).
this is a common trait for oils that have
an analgesic effect. me, i like the effect
since i practically live in my jar of tiger
balm after a rough hockey game.

tiger balm, incidentally, tends to fade
fairly fast. i rarely notice the effect
after about 8 minutes or so. eucalyptus
oil (notably the "axe oil" brand available
at chinese herb stores) tends to last for
about 15 to 20 minutes, unless you've gotten
it between your fingers while doing a massage
with it, in which case it seems to last a
lot longer. massaging with straight
eucalyptus oil tends to be a little difficult...
axe brand is a "squeaky" oil rather than a
slick oil like grapeseed or almond. typically
if it's needed i'll apply the eucalyptus first,
work it in well, then follow up with a light
coating of grapeseed oil. then, roll lightly
in sourdough crumbs and fry....wait, wait,
wrong newsgroup.....

Update on my massage oil project: I haven't done anything with the
"kitchen extracts" idea yet, but I did do something with essential oils &
a base oil. In particular, cold-pressed safflower oil, lemon essential
oil, sandalwood essential oil, and rosemary essential oil. The book I've
got recommends up to 5 drops essential oil to 1 teaspoon of base oil -
which is more concentrated than your estimate, by the way.

After we've tried out the massage oil, I'll tell you-all on
alt.aromatherapy and alt.backrubs how it works out (and what proportions
I used).

Okay, I tried it out. It works great. Of course, I can't tell you how
much of that is technique, and how much of that is content. Oh well. :)
I got the idea for the lemon-sandalwood-rosemary combination from an
aromatherapy essential oils book, by looking under "stress" - seems my
main massage recipient is subject to a fair amount of it. I then looked
to see which oils I had on hand, and then tinkered with the proportions
until I had something pleasant...

9 drops lemon essential oil
9 drops sandalwood essential oil
4 drops rosemary essential oil
Mix in ratio of (no more than) 5 drops oil to 1 teaspoon base oil.

Well, actually, the quantities I used were

27 drops lemon
27 drops sandalwood
12 drops rosemary
1/4 cup, plus 2 tsp cold-pressed ("Hain" Brand) safflower oil

For reference: 1/4 cup (the lowest line on my Pyrex glass measure) = 2
oz. = 4 TB = 12 tsp. So I shot for 60 drops of essential oil. When I
wound up with 66 drops of essential oils, I slopped a little extra
safflower oil in there.

So, that's my first massage oil. I call it "Baden's Massage Oil #1."
Call me a literalist, what can I say...

My next experiment may involve rose & lavender... maybe. Or possible
something else.

(I didn't see the original posting so I'm really responding to someone
 elses response.)

Vanilla, peppermint and orange are all well-known skin allergenes,
that is when they are applied to the skin they cause allergic
reactions in people who are prone to such. In other words it's a good
idea to ask the people you give them to about allergies beforehand.

This information comes from my dermatologist doctor and was given to
me when it turned out that I had allergic skin reactions to both
vanilla and peppermint.

This news group is too quiet. So I would like to get some chatter going.

For a person newly interested in discovering what aromatherapy is about, what
books would you recommend. I've been researching for about two years in the
field of holistic medicine and often have seen references to aromatherapy, but
have not looked into it yet. I've seen some books, but at a glance they have
been sort of vague. I'm look for books referencing the best application for
use of aromatherapy, and books that would detail on how to make your own
herbal remedies.

Thanks in advance.

hi tris!
thank you for a very interesting post.
sorry for your wife.
migraines may have various origins. you dont say what your physician found.
imho, in terms of symptoms, you may want to try this very nice formula:
*mentha piperita*, 2 drops, plus *ocimum basilicum*, 1 drop, in a teaspoon
value of organic sesame oil. apply gently: forefront, temples, earlobules. be
extra careful *not* to put any oil inside the ears though. i repeat that: no
oil in the external acoustic meatus. only a little bit on the lobs. since
your mileage may vary, you may have to modify the number of drops according
to effect. the common word for mentha pipperita is *peppermint*. for ocimum
basilicum, its *basil*. many essential oils on the market are rectified, or
peroxidized, deterpenized, decolorized, reconstituated, and/or mixed with
another essential oil, alcohol, lipids, and other chemicals. you may need to
check your oil with techniques like gaschromatographicic sreening or to get
your oil from a company that does check its products. to the best of my
knowledge, there is only one company at this time in the us that does that
kind of thing: amrita aromatherapy, po box 2178, fairfield ia 52556. phone
515 472 9136: ask for doctor streicher if you have questions about quality
and essential oils. of course, it doesnt mean other companies dont have any
valuable products. organic sesame oil can be found in bulk at any reputable
health food store, but if you have difficulties, email me and ill tell you
where i get mine.
all this will work well only temporarely. you need to clear the physiological
pathways more deeply than that in order to get anything done in the long run.
but you already knew that.
best wishes to you, tris, and to your wife.
us law being what it is, *you may use the information in this post only at
your own risk*.

I too am not a "professional" aromatherapist though I absolutely believe in
potential uses.

Like your wife, I suffer from sever migraines. And like your wife my sense
of smell is greatly enhanced.....almost everything I smell makes my head throb
and makes me vomit! Heres what I do though that helps tremendously (BTW I
wont take any medications for my migraines because I nurse my child). I take
tepid baths with lavender. I also use lavender in compresses. To me this is
one of the most soothing of the oils Ive experienced. I think lavender is reputed
to have a energizing action on the senses.

Im suremost people will tell you to be wary of what you purchase. Only buy pure
essential oils. With the heightened "fad" of aromatherapy (atleast here in So Cal)
there are many things on the market that I feel are a rip-off.

BTW I used several oils during my last labor (lavender was the first) along with
self hypnosis. My first labor had been 38 hrs followed by a crash c-section, my
second was just about the same. But I can honestly say that using oils helped
me relax and concentrate and continue on.....although the nurses thought I was
ABSOLUTELY CRAZY bringing in my vials and my diffuser...and they had been
forewarned <G>.

And finally I tend to like "traditional" oils....lemon, peppermint, eucalyptis (sp),
vanilla....one I diffused I actually became high after a few minutes!

lesa

BTW what a GREAT idea for a newsgroup!

I don't believe that the average consumer has access or money to get a
gaschromatography done on each essential oil purchase....
As far as my knowledge with GC....they are not very accurate if you only
have them done once one on each oil you sell....you would have to have a
GC done on each new batch that comes in...so I imagine this is why most
companies...large and small don't do it...... If you have to know your
producers......know your essential oils....I am speaking of course of the
companies when they purchase their oils from various producers....

on the consumer level.....they have to know who they are dealing with...is
this company knowledgable about essential oils? Do they tell you the
botanical name, country of origin, wild or organic, etc.? Do you like how
their oils smell overall...?? Are they referenced in any books? This might
mean nothing...but it also might mean that "authorities" in the industry
are familiar with them and trust their quality and integrity in the
marketplace...I don't personally like dealing with essential oil sellers
that can tell you nothing about the oils and their uses...no matter how
many tests they run or how pretty they package them......

You have to be careful overgeneralizing that only one company does GC or
that *most* oils are tainted in some way......because what you might not
realize is that this is a very small industry...I personally know that
some EO companies buy from other EO companies or some companies use the
exact same producers in different countries to buy their oils.....in some
countries.....you only have one or two producers.....

You can trust and buy from whomever you choose , but a GC is not the end
all to end all way to decide who has the best....

thanks for letting me respond with my 2 cents...errr...well maybe 3 cents
worth!

Patty

There is a store in Canada (they have a few in the states and one in
Moscow) called the Soapberry Shop. In addition to being environmentally
friendly and against animal testing, they sell pure essential
aromatherapy oils. Their combination of wheatgerm, lavender, marjoram,
and thyme in their Relaxing Massage Oil, is highly recommended for
headaches. I don't personally get migraines, but it's worth a shot!

My mom recently started a medication that makes her high-strung and jittery.
I would like to hear suggestions for essential oils that could help these
side effects of the drug. Rose was one idea I came up with. Does this
sound reasonable?
Chamomile has worked well for her insomnia.
p.s. does it annoy anyone else that this newsgroup is so dead? I know
there is a mailing list, but I think there is a place for a newsgroup too.

Good point, bring it up in alt.config.

What kind of medicine is she taking. Is jitteryness a side-effect? Has she
told her doctor of this side effect?

I'll do some research in a book I have and post later...

For those interested in what Dr. Chopra is up to these days, you may want
to tune into the "American Journal" on Thursday, Feb. 23. The time for
this syndicated show varies across the country, so check your TV
listings. The program is going to have a 5-6 minute report on Dr. Deepak
Chopra.

It's that time again, I can feel it coming. Now what should I do? It's about
10 days before my period is due, and I can feel the energy starting to build
up. Breaking out and very oily skin is a big problem, however around my nose,
ears and scalp I get very dry and peel, crack, and scab. Any suggestions on
how to get my skin balanced and healthy at this time of month?
Any suggestions for cramps, depression, and fatigue would be much appreciated
too!

I'm not good on skincare, but for cramps I would recommend essential oil
of clary sage, either one drop in a teaspoonful of almond oil, rubbed into
your belly in a clockwise direction, or as a hot compress. This oil is
very sedative, and you should refrain from using alcohol within 24 hours
of it, as it can be enormously potentiating.

As for the depression and fatigue, try a bath with six drops of essential
oil of lemongrass, which is fairly "magic" in such circumstances. Other
good baths for easing fatigue at any time of the month include plain
rosemary, or a blend of rosemary and geranium or rosemary and rosewood.
Don't use these baths late in the evening, or you won't sleep.

Maggie Tisserand recommends oil of basil on a tissue to dispel mental
fatigue.

Sounds like a bit of tension and anxiety, mixed in there as well.
Relaxation, meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga, self hypnosis possibly, have a massage.
Look into those things. What else is happening in your life at the moment?

Aromatherapy: Try using a (water) oil burner with some of these oils.
Clary Sage (use a very small amount, powerful aroma, 1 drop or less),
Lavender (maybe nice soothing bath)
Geranium
Jasmine
Melissa

There are others, but this should get you started.
rgds,
William

All right, as I am writing the stuff for my web page I have found that there
are a lot of things that I want to include that doesn't have to do with PMS,
but with other female probllems as well. Anything on any female-related
infections, pains, etc. would be much appreciated. If it is something you have
found through experimentation or trial and error I will gladly acknowledge you
as the source.
Much thanks again,
Kristi

I've read that Clary Sage extract oil helps sooth PMS symptoms,
inclucing cramps and crabbiness. You can sniff it, put a drop in your
tea (decaf, of course), or when I want fast results, I scoop out a big
spoonfull of brown sugar or honey, put a drop of Clary Sage in it, and
then eat (swallow) it. Tastes weird, but it works.

For zits, I put lavender extract oil on a Qtip and gently put in on the
zitty areas.

Try Samara Botane in Seattle, WA. They only do mail order, are very fussy
about the quality of their oils (I sell aromatherapy books to the owner &
I've been really impressed by her knowledge). They have a toll-free number

A critique on the manuals by Jaswinder Sandu B.Sc (MicroBiol.)

The author has spent several years of concerted effort building up the materials for his safety
reference manuals which cover the above areass...

These are fast becoming landmark works, and are promised to be expeanded to include further
sections devoted to Aromatic materials as well as allied subjects.

inspite of all the interest in essential oils and particularly with the explosion in
Aromatherapy, there is as yet no corpus of knowledge which presents the wide usage of oils in
theraputics. French authors (Valnet et al) often were not very specific on the actual oil they
used in their treatments. This can cause problems when the distinction between common name,
scientific name, botanical or the origin is not made clear. This is particualarly important
expecially where clonal forms may have replaced original botanicals. (e.g. the replacement of
Lavander vera or Lavander officinalis by Lavander angustifolia).

Many English authors have paid tribute to the French writers on Aromatherapy, but in some
instances the botanical or oil was not translated correctly and this has resulted in some
confusion. Martin's work has set out to put the whole of the current interest inessential oils
on a scientific foundation. More important, his manual is both concise and based on objective
documentary evidence and NOT anecdotal information.

Martin Watt of course, is a fully qualified Medical Herbalist and this gives him the status of
being able to put forward his statements with authority. With this new section 4 he has
continued his work on the 'side-effects' of oils and has presented what is probably the most
comprehensive susrvey ever undertaken of referenced dermatological literature, this latest work
is particually significant s it adds substantually to the corpus of knowledge available to
anyone who works with natural fragrance materials.

This is essentially a worker's reference book. Anyone who uses, studies or is engaged in
Aromatherapy or Phytotherapy should regard this as an essential piece of their equipment. It is
highly recommended.

Hello fellow allergy sufferer. I too suffer from severe allergies and have
found help, and health only in the last few years. A few things you might
want to consider. Get a food and environmental allergy test from an M.D. -
preferably from an Allergist who does chemical testing. I say this only because
the alternative tests I went through were non-conclusive for me. I have suffered
from allergies since childhood, and thankfully have outgrown most of them. What
you said about just obtaining hayfever like symptoms in the last few years is very
common. Adults do, and can become allergic to foods and environmental factors.

It wasn't until I found the true source to my allergies that I was able to monitor
my environment. Unfortunatly, I was allergic to my Cat - when we (tearfully) gave
her away, I no longer relied on most, if not all of my inhalers, allergy pills, etc.
My husband, Jason, is allergic to wheat. He limits, or omits any
wheat products (which is in almost all bread/cereal/pastry products) from his diet
and is allergy free.

>The congestion is aggravating my TMJ, making my neck muscles stiff.
>
As a Certified Massage Therapist, I suffered from this, as well as treat it
in my own practice. It been hypothosized that allergies affect TMJ directly.
Some researchers are suggesting that "grinding" and "teeth clenching" are
related to allergic symptoms.

I have had severe TMJ and neck soreness for years - the suggestions you have
had posted from other massage therapists are quite valid - follow the suggestions
for Deep Tissue Massage/Relaxation/Yoga/Excercises.

Be well and good luck!

In the way of herbal products, there are certain oils which have
insect-repellant properties, most famous of which are citronella and
pennyroyal. Also, I know of references to bay/laurel and eucalyptus.
Garlic enjoys a certain following in our circles as well.
I have personally had good luck with Kiss My Face "Kiss-Off" and
Quantum "Z-Z-Z-Away." I know that there are many other very good brands
available at most quality natural food stores.
In the way of nutritional supplements, Vitamin B-1 at 500 mg. daily has
been shown to be quite effective after taking for a few days. Lower
levels may work for some people, but the research was done at 500 mgs.

I hope that this is useful information. I have been selling
supplements for 12 years and these are generally effective remedies.

Valerie Ann Worwood's _The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy_
has a chapter called "The Stillroom," in which she describes making your
own perfumes and colognes; at the end of the chapter is a small section
describing how to distill your own essential oils.

Hope this helps,

Don't know about Toronto, but the Essential Oil Company [Lake Oswego, OR]
has it for sale -- $6.66 for 4 ounces. The problem with this source is
that they add a $5 surcharge to orders less than $50. If you're still
interested, or would like more information, here's the scoop:

Hi Mike,

There is a company located in Souther California, I believe LA Called Haarmen and Reimer. You would have to call
Directory Assistance in the 213 or 310 area code. They manufacture perfume oils in Germany, and they
publish pretty good books on the subject. They are called the H&R Guides. You may even find them in
a public library. I'd tell you where to buy them, but the source I had for them went broke.

Good luck

I am currently 7 1/2 months pregnant and I am not looking forward to
the prospect of labour. I've heard that using certain
essential oils can aid relaxation and/or create a sense of peace
during such a stressful time so as to help the mother to be. If anyone
knows of these, (along with recipes for the novice!) I'd be grateful to
hear.

Thanks

omega 3 components that many people are deficient in that relates to

If you think about it, transdermal medications (skin patches for smokers,
motion sickness, angina sufferers, etc.) are just a high tech application
of aromatherapy massage (ie medicines absorbed through the skin). Think
about all the medications in your doctor's bag that derive DIRECTLY from
plants and plant extracts -- taxalt to suppress tumor growth, aspirin,
most antibiotics (derived from micro-plants) just to name a few. And
there is no question that smells affect us physically and emotionally. If
you doubt it, I invite you to smell Play-doh and see if it doesn't make
you feel better/happy then spend a Saturday night in the drunk tank
(sober!) and see if you don't notice an aroma-induced physical "effect"
(like the urge to hurl!).
Can aromatherapy energize the chakras, balance your aura, or cause plant
elementals to work for your success and happiness? Who knows...
All things considered, I think a health practice based on inhaling and
massaging into the skin pure plant oils makes a lot of sense.

Michel & Linda Lowe
