F<O>CUS/HEALTH: Tens of Millions are "without adequate care"

Since USA Today insists on "Copyright", here's a paraphrase of
a Feb. 27, 1992 story "MANY ARE WITHOUT ADEQUATE CARE" :

A study by the National Association of Community Health Centers found
that one in six Americans is not served by the "U.S. health-care system"
including that while 35 million have "no insurance", 43 million are
"without adequate care"

The study cited by USA Today also found that at least 8 million
covered by Medicare or Medicaid can't get adequate care; one in 3 of
these "under-served" are children, and one in 4 of them are either
disabled or senior citizens.

The preceding _Nation_ short estimating some *60%* of poor Americans
not even being covered -- and hence not counted in the above
statistics on those covered but "under-served" -- gives us one
indication of the extent to which this mainstream media report
understates the human catastrophes involved.

Under a "Barriers to Health Care Cited" section, the USA Today article
also notes that the study in question found that among the "43
million" denied decent medical care were many "patients living in
communities with high health risks, particularly urban slums" and that
the study also cited many "patients unable to find doctors accepting
Medicare or Medicaid" and "the lack of primary-care doctors in poor
communities and language and cultural barriers."
