Problem: At-risk youth often have no place to turn to for assistance and support. Any source of support for these teens needs to be highly accessible and to encourage use of its services. Proposed solution: The state of New Jersey decided to bring the necessary services to the teenagers by offering social services in the high schools. The centers, located in schools where the need is high, offer services addressing mental and physical health, substance abuse, and family problems, In addition, they offer assistance with educational difficulties and help finding employment. Recreational programs are provided to attract the students and provide a safe space for these activities. The state provides the funding, with few restrictions on the programs apart from requiring agreements involving the agencies involved, the schools, and the local teachers' unions, and requiring an advisory committee. Evaluation: The centers have been a success at provideing services for the teens in their areas. Grades have improved and behavioral problems have declined. Students have taken advantage of the mental health programs in particular.
