He later opened a hate hotline, was found in contempt of court and faces a jail term, depending on the outcome of his appeal. Now McAleer is about to sponsor a speech in Vancouver by Tom Metzger, a notorious white supremecist from California who founded a group called White Aryan Resistance (WAR). "I think this city needs a jolt," said McAleer, 25. McAleer, who is on unemployment insurance since he lost his job as an exterminator after his conviction, aims to deliver that jolt in a stepped-up campaign of what he calls civil disobedience. "Gandhi did it, why can't we?" he said. McAleer is part of a new breed of hate propagandists who reject labels of right and left in favor of a coalition of whites who want an Aryan-only nation. "I don't care what your politics are as long as race comes first," he said. "The Jewish lobby" has too much power, McAleer said, adding that he is angry at the "white elite in our government who has sold out to them." Metzger's speech is scheduled for Jan. 22 at an unidentified location in Vancouver. Metzger and his son John, the leader of WAR's youth wing, were deported from Toronto last summer after speaking at a rally of the neo-Nazi Heritage Front. The immigration department says Metzger needs ministerial approval before he can return. "We're talking about a criminal," said Ian Kagedan of B'nai Brith Canada. "As Canadians, we should recognize people whose activities are designed to disrupt peace and harmony in our community." Metzger, 54, is a back-slapping television repairman who has been at the forefront of the revival of hatemongers on the West Coast. A former grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, Metzger lives in Fallbrook, Calif., where he publishes a newspaper and runs a hate hotline featuring "torchlight talks." In 1990, an Oregon jury found Metzger responsible for inciting two skinheads who murdered a 27-year-old Ethiopian in Portland. He was ordered to pay personally $5 million of the $12.5 million-US judgement against WAR. "I admire the guy, because of all the attacks that have been made on him," McAleer said. "They've taken away his business, they've taken away his house, they've taken everything, and yet he keeps on going. "I admire people who go the full measure with their ideas. This is not the time for half-measures." McAleer said he became a racist after race riots in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, England, near where he lived in the early 1980's. "There's a lot of sentiment out there that I hope to capture," he said. That sentiment is bigotry. "The difference between a racist and a bigot is that the racist is educated on the subject," he said. =30=
