FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Ellis Mottur WEDNESDAY, October 28, 1992 (501) 399-3945 AMERICA'S LEADING SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS ENDORSE CLINTON/GORE 12 Nobel Prize Winners, Group Includes Carl Sagan, Sally Ride ALBUQUERQUE, NM --More than five dozen of the nation's leading scientists, including the noted astronomer Carl Sagan and America's first woman astronaut, Sally Ride, today (10/28) endorsed Gov. Bill Clinton and Sen. Al Gore, D-TN for President and Vice President of the United States. "Bill Clinton and I are committed to investing in America's future by investing in the new technologies that will help us create jobs and revive our economy. Science is the key to that future. We are honored to have the support of this important group of scientists and grateful for the confidence they're demonstrating today in our plan for real change to put people first," said Gore. The National Council of Scientists and Engineers for Clinton/Gore includes 67 leading scientists and engineers from across the country, including 12 Nobel Prize winners, two former Science Advisers to the President, 49 members of the National Academy of Sciences or Engineering, or the Institute of Medicine, and other leading scientists such as Sagan and Ride. Representing the Council at a meeting with Gore today (10/28) at the University of New Mexico here, were: Council Chairman Marvin Goldberger, former President of the California Institute of Technology and former Director of the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey; Nobel Laureate Murray Gell-Mann of Los Alamos, New Mexico; Nobel Laureate Charles H. Townes of the University of California at Berkeley; Council Vice Chairman Sheila Widnall of MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Professor John Hopfield of the California Institute of Technology; Dr. Harold Rosen, Vice President of Hughes Aircraft; Professor Sherwood Rowland of the University of California at Irvine; and Dr. John Rubel, former Senior Vice President of Litton Industries. Dr. Sagan said, "I'm voting for Bill Clinton. Of all the candidates running for President, he offers the best prospect of building a future worthy of our children. I've known and respected Al Gore for a decade. He's comfortable with the language and methods of science, and is deeply committed to preventing its misuse. Together, Clinton and Gore can provide an urgently needed course correction for the national trajectory." Dr. Ride said, "I know the kind of vision and leadership needed to chart a course to outer space. I've decided to vote for Bill Clinton and Al Gore because I believe they exemplify the kind of leadership needed to chart the course for America's future on Planet Earth." Dr. Goldberger said, "Only through the humane uses of science and technology can our over-populated, under-resourced planet survive. To solve the critical problems facing humankind, we need a scientifically literate society, capable of making sound judgments on complex, technical issues. I believe the Clinton/Gore plans for education, research, and technology provide the best basis for overcoming our challenges." Dr. Widnall said, "America needs to restructure our civilian science and technology base. We have had 12 years with a government reluctant to experiment with the support of advanced technologies for commercial development. It is time to try a more vigorous approach to transforming scientific and technological inventions into industrial and commercial products which create jobs. This is one of the major reasons why I intend to vote for Bill Clinton and Al Gore." A list of the 67 members of the Council for Scientists and Engineers who have endorsed Clinton/Gore follows. ###########
