[THIS IS THE DAILY BRIEFING FROM THE WHITE HOUSE TO ITS OFFICIALS AND OTHER SUPPORTERS OF ITS HEALTH-REFORM PROGRAM. IT PROVIDES AN INSIDE LOOK AT HOW THE ADMINISTRATION IS PROMOTING ITS PLAN. THIS ITEM WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE SAME SUBJECT LINE (WITH DIFFERENT DATES) SO YOU CAN EASILY SKIP IT IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO READ IT.] The White House Health Care Reform Today November 3, 1993 * Today, the President and the First Lady begin a nationwide tour to bring his health care plan to the American people, encouraging them to read it, discuss it, debate it and understand what it will mean for them and their families. In a visit to Ambridge Pennsylvania, they'll drop off a copy of "Health Security. The President's Report to the American People" a plain language description of the President's health reform plan. * Today, Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen will testify before the Senate Finance Committee. He'll be talking about the overall numbers as well as the financing package. Remember, 100% of the American people will pay more for health insurance if we do nothing. If we do nothing, more people will lose their insurance, more people will be unable to get insurance due to pre-existing conditions, more people will see their premiums rise out of control. * Today, the Health Insurance Association of America will hold a news conference to attack the President's Health Security Act. Once again, they will make the inaccurate and misleading statement that the President's plan limits choice. It does not. In fact, the Health Security Act increases consumer choices by allowing a wide variety of health care options that are picked by the individuals ... not by the employers or by the insurance companies. That's choice. * The HIAA ads aren't universally accepted in the insurance community. Writing yesterday for Reuters, Mike Clancy reported that some insurance officials say the "...ads are just adding gasoline to the fire." And that: "Between criticism from the White House and dislike from the public, I am starting to feel like a fire hydrant at a dog show." Seymour Sternberg from New York Life said: "It may well be that these ads are not accomplishing what we would like." * Tomorrow, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will travel to Huntington, West Virginia. She visit Marshall University library where she'll present them with a copy of "Health Security. The President's Report to the American People." On Friday, she'll visit upstate New York.
