He outlined the new long-term care program in his health reform plan, which would provide respite care, home health services, nursing care, adult day care, and other services to disabled Americans. Rewarding their "heroics", the President said that health reform has to reward the families who have worked hard and sacrificed to keep their family member at home and out of a nursing home by providing help: respite care, financial assistance, and greater care options in the home and the community. This morning at 7:00 a.m., The President will outline his approach to health care reform on CBS This Morning, answering questions from Americans concerned about health care. Today, the Children's Defense Fund released a study -- The Health Insurance Crisis for America's Children -- saying that an alarming number of children are denied private health insurance. In fact, barely half of nation's children will be covered by health insurance through their parent's employers by the year 2000 if current trends continue. The study argues that universal coverage, comprehensive benefits and required employer contributions are needed to stem declining coverage for children. CDF President Marian Wright Edelman announced the study saying: "For two decades, employer cost-cutting and the rising cost of health insurance have forced millions of children out of the private health insurance system and children's health and the public treasury are left to pick up the tab. . . Families who work too often lose care for their children and we need to change the system to make sure that every American child has health security that can never be taken away." The President will discuss his vision for health reform: First, everyone's got to be covered with guaranteed private insurance that can never be taken away. Second, the President's approach will give choice back to the people, not the insurance companies. Third, the President's approach will protect Medicare and help older Americans. Fourth, the President's approach builds on the current system, with everyone who works getting health coverage at work. Finally, the President's approach will make it illegal for insurance companies to take away your insurance.
