THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary _________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release August 10, 1993 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES DIANE B. FRANKEL DIRECTOR OF THE INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM SERVICES WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate Diane B. Frankel director of the Institute of Museum Services. "Diane Frankel has spent her career strengthening the commitment to teaching in the museums in which she has worked and fostering closer ties between museums and their local communities," the President said. "With her unique background as the founder of her own museum, I am confident she will do an excellent job directing the IMS in its efforts to support America's museums, historical sites and zoos." Frankel has served as executive director of the Bay Area Discovery Museum in San Francisco, California since 1986 - a museum she developed from concept and founded. Prior to founding the museum, Frankel served as dean of the School of Liberal and Professional Arts and the John F. Kennedy University (1985-86) and as director of the university's Center for Museum Studies (1980 - 85). From 1976 - 80, Frankel served as associate director for education at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Frankel earned a BA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1964, and a MAT degree in Museum Education from George Washington University in 1976. She received post-graduate training through the Museum Management Institute, Getty Trust program in 1988. IMS is a federal agency established to encourage and assist museums in their educational goals, to assist in the modernization of their methods and facilities, and to ease the financial burden born by museums as a result of their increasing use by the public. The agency's five grant-making programs provide support for museums of all types including art, science, and history museums, zoos, arboretums, historical sites and nature centers. -30-30-30-
