THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary ________________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release April 20, 1994 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JOSEPH PAOLINO AS AMBASSADOR TO THE REPUBLIC OF MALTA The President today announced his intention to nominate Joseph R. Paolino, Jr., of Providence, Rhode Island, as Ambassador to the Republic of Malta. Paolino, who has been involved in local and state government in Rhode Island for more than twenty years, served as Mayor of the capital City of Providence for six years (1984-1991) and most recently served as Director of the Rhode Island Department of Economic Development (1991-1994). After becoming the youngest elected Mayor in the country in 1984, Paolino quickly set his agenda, placing economic development and commerce opportunities at the top of his list. These priorities were carried over to the State of Rhode Island's Department of Economic Development, where he instituted a strategic international trade partnership and managed all of the state's commerce activities on behalf of the state's business community. His efforts translated into reduced business costs and an improved economic climate in the state. Born in Providence on April 26, 1955, Paolino earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Roger Williams College and a Master of Liberal Arts in Government from Harvard University. He and his wife, Lianne, have four children: Jennifer (nine), Christina (seven), Jacqueline (two), and Joseph, III (six months). -30-30-30-
