THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary ________________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release January 20, 1994 PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL EARTHQUAKE RELIEF President Clinton today announced two additional measures to respond to the immediate needs of the victims of the Southern California earthquake: * The State of California was advanced $100 million from the Presidential Disaster Fund for Public Assistance, for all repairs to local, city, and state infrastructure and facilities; * The President announced a five-day extension of 100% direct Federal assistance costs for emergency work in the effected area. The assistance includes all Federal efforts in providing shelters, temporary housing, food, water, public health and safety, and other essential emergency services that are being provided by the Federal government. On January 17, the President authorized 100% Federal funding for emergency work for the first 72 hours of the disaster. This five-day extension begins at 5:00 pm (EST) January 20, 1994. These steps are in addition to the aid the President announced yesterday of $45 million in Department of Transportation funds and $95 million in Small Business Administration funds, which will support $239 million in loans. # # #
