THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary ________________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release September 30, 1994 PRESIDENT NAMES FRANCES ANN ULMER AND GERALD PAVLETICH TO THE NORTH PACIFIC ANADROMOUS FISH COMMISSION The President today announced his intention to appoint Frances Ann Ulmer of Alaska and Gerald W. Pavletich of Washington state to the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission. Frances Ann Ulmer of Alaska has been a member of the Alaska State House of Representatives since 1986 and is currently Minority Leader. Formerly Mayor of Juneau, she is a Member of the Executive Board of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region. Her leadership posts have included Chair of the U.S. Conference of Women Mayors; Chair of the Alaska Coastal Policy Council; and Co-Chair, the Tourism Working Group. Gerald W. Pavletich of Washington state is the West Coast Representative of Trout Unlimited and an Advisor to the Governor's Salmon Advisory Committee. Previously, he was the Executive Director of the Northwest Steelhead and Salmon Council Trout Unlimited. He is also a member, Board of Directors, Northwest Renewable Resources Center and the Olympic Natural Resources Center. He was Washington Recreational Fishing Representative, Salmon Advisory Panel, to the Pacific Fisheries Management Council; and has been a US State Department delegate to the US/Canada Pacific Salmon Treaty. The North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) is an international body composed of representatives of the United States, Japan and the Russian Federation. It serves as a forum for promoting the conservation of anadromous stocks and related species, marine mammals and sea birds in the high seas area of the North Pacific Ocean. The term anadromous refers to fish that swim upstream to spawn, which includes many species of salmon. The NPAFC coordinates the collection and analysis of scientific data, and high seas fishery enforcement activities by member countries. The U.S. is represented by three Commissioners; one must be a resident of Alaska, one of Washington state. The third must be a U.S. government official. -30-30-30-30-
