Karimov of Uzbekistan met today in the Oval Office and discussed the deepening relationship between the United States and Uzbekistan. The two presidents addressed key political, economic, and security issues of mutual interest, including progress in political and economic reform, as well as developments in Central Asia. President Clinton underscored the strong U.S. interest in the independence, stability, and prosperity of the states of Central Asia. In particular, he stressed the United States' efforts to assist Uzbekistan in promoting solid links with the West, constructive relations with neighboring countries and full integration into the global community. President Clinton noted that the United States seeks close ties with Uzbekistan across the full range of issues in recognition of the key role Uzbekistan plays in Central Asia. # # #
