THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary For Immediate Release August 17, 1993 PRESIDENT NAMES SIX OFFICIALS President Clinton announced his intention to make the following nominations today: Luis Sequeira, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Science and Education Anthony A. Williams, Chief Financial Officer, Department of Agriculture Michael DiMario, Public Printer of the United States Margaret A. Browing, Member, National Labor Relations Board Magdalena Jacobsen, Member, National Mediation Board Anthony P. Carnevale, Chairman, National Commission for Employment Policy (appointment does not require Senate confirmation) Luis Sequeira is the J.C. Walker Professor of Bacteriology and Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin, where he has taught and conducted research since 1961. He also serves as chairman of the agricultural section of the National Academy of Sciences, and has previously served as chief scientist of the USDA Competitive Grants Program. Sequeira holds his bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees from Harvard University, and undertook postdoctoral studies in Cuba and Brazil. Anthony A. Williams is the Deputy Comptroller of the State of Connecticut and an Adjunct Professor of Public Affairs at Columbia University. From 1989-91, he was executive director of the city of St. Louis' Community Development Agency. He has also worked as an attorney and management consultant. He holds degrees from Yale College, the Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Law School. (more) August 17, 1993 page two Michael DiMario has worked for the U.S. Government Printing Office since 1971, most recently as its Director of Procurement Services. An Air Force veteran and attorney, he previously served as a criminal investigator in the Defense Intelligence Agency and a Personnel Security Specialist at the Department of the Air Force and Department of the Navy. DiMario holds a B.A. from Davis & Elkins College, and a J.D. from Georgetown University. He also studied at the Harvard University Business School. Margaret Anne Browning is a founding partner of Spear, Borish, Endy, Browning & Spear, a law firm representing such unions as the Sheet Metal Workers, Paperworkers, Firefighters, Glaziers, Operating Engineers, and many others. She was previously an associate with the firm of Meranze, Katz, Spear and Wilderman, and taught labor law at the Rutgers School of Law. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Browning worked as a clerk to U.S. District Judge Murray M. Schwartz. She received her undergraduate education at Swarthmore College. Magdalena Jacobsen is serving her second term as a Commissioner of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. After serving on that commission from 1976-89, she was reappointed to it in 1992. In the interim, she served as Director of Employee Relations for the City and County of San Francisco. Before entering the public sector, Jacobsen served as Manager of Labor Relations for Continental Airlines' Los Angeles operations, and as Secretary/Treasurer of the Flight Attendants Division of the Airline Pilots Association. She holds a B.S. from the University of San Francisco and an M.S. from Golden Gate University. Anthony P. Carnevale is the president of the Institute for Workplace Learning, a research center focusing on workplace training, high-performance work organization, technology and work, and workforce diversity. He previously served as Vice President and Chief Economist of the American Society for Training and Development. Among his other previous positions, Carnevale was Government Relations Director of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, and Senior Budget Analyst for the Senate Budget Committee. # # #
