THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release October 12, 1993 The President today made available $65 million in emergency funding for the Department of Health and Human Services. These funds will be used by the Department of Health and Human Services to address public health and social service needs arising from flooding along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, particularly in the Upper Midwest. Uses of the money will include preventing the spread of disease, repair of public health clinics, and providing social services for the elderly. The funds made available were appropriated in P.L. 103-75, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act of 1993. These funds were made available contingent upon the President submitting a budget request to the Congress and designating the amount requested as an emergency requirement. Of the $75 million appropriated for this purpose, $65 million is now available with no further Congressional action required. # # #
