The White House Office of the Press Secretary ----------------------------------------------------------------- For Immediate Release October 21, 1993 STATEMENT BY AIDS POLICY COORDINATOR KRISTINE GEBBIE In a presentation to the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, I re-stated a view that I have shared with many audiences in recent weeks. I believe that effective HIV prevention with adolescents must be developed in a larger context and include a comprehensive health education curriculum which begins early and is age appropriate. Abstinence is the surest prevention of HIV transmission, and must be communicated as a part of the complete prevention message. The next generation of young people should be prepared to enter an adult sexual life with a better base of attitudes and information than we have provided so far. I regret that recent press reports have mischaracterized my view. #
