THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary _________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release September 28, 1993 STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY At today's White House briefing, Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers said that 2500 U.S. troops participating in the UNOSOM II peacekeeping mission in Somalia would be rotated out and replaced by troops from certain other countries during the coming months. The Press Secretary's guidance was incorrect. We regret the error. The facts are that existing UN plans do call for the United States to draw down its forces as troops from other countries enter, and to turn over to civilian contractors certain logistics functions now being performed by U.S. troops. But specific numbers or origins of replacement troops, and specific implementation of the UN plans for transferring the logistics functions, have not been decided. # # #
