His library guide is updated frequently and is available as LIBRARIES.TXT on this archive. The library portion of my guide is called MET-LIB.TXT on this system. To access this archive: FTP ftp.unt.edu Type USER ANONYMOUS Type GUEST for password Type CD LIBRARY to change directories Type DIR to see a list of files Type GET LIBRARIES.TXT (To transfer a copy of Barron's list to your computer.) Type QUIT to return to homebase Note: files that end with a ZIP or ARC extension are archived and will have to be transferred as binary files. Be sure to check my guide for information on how to transfer and later download binary files. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Online Public Access Catalogs Update ==================================== UNITED STATES San Francisco State University OPAC software: GEAC Advanced Telnet opac.sfsu.edu Logon: Login: type sfsu Password: Hit RETURN Logoff: Type E for exit then choose option 3 from main menu Campus Wide Information Services ================================ Rutgers University Pilot CWIS Telnet hangout.rutgers.edu 98 Logoff: Type QUIT Usual CWIS features plus news and reference materials Many of the services are restricted to Rutgers hosts Reference section includes: Concise Oxford Dictionary, Oxford Thesaurus, Oxford Dictionary of Familiar Quotations (and Modern Q), and CIA World Factbook (warning: the last item is not always current) University of Minnesota Telnet vx.acs.umn.edu Telnet 128.101.63.1 Login: Type info Hit at vt100 Logoff: Type q at main menu Searchable campus events calendar (slow but worth the wait), newsletters, minutes of faculty committees - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - REFERENCE MATERIALS ONLINE "He [Thomas Gray] was dull in a new way, and that made many people think him great." Samuel Johnson - March 28, 1775 This quotation was found in the Oxford Dictionary of Familiar Quotations database on the Rutgers CWIS. This CWIS is an example of a very easy to use system - it displays brief menus and you just type the heading (or first few letters of the heading) that you are interested in exploring. Type "help" for more information. The Concise Oxford Dictionary offers very flexible searching which should delight anagram and crossword puzzle enthusiasts. Over 250,000 titles are included in the catalog which was updated at the beginning of the Fall Quarter. Most of the books are related to current classes, but a number of unsold titles from previous courses are still available - some that are no longer readily available from other booksellers. Browsing the email messages I learned about the "old technology of 'Builtin Orderly Organized Knowledge' items" and lots more. This bulletin board features easy to use access to guides to libraries and networks, information on electronic newsletters, annotated lists of new titles in library and information science, and current contents of library and information science journals. For example, to connect to the Ham Radio Callbook database requires adding 2000 to the end of the telnet address. Depending on the software used at your site you may be able to connect to this resource using one of the following commands: telnet 128.235.1.10 2000 telnet 128.235.1.10..2000 telnet 128.235.1.10::2000 telnet 128.235.1.10 /port=2000 The Metro State Vax help files includes a rather dire warning about using the last option, so I was a bit hesitant about trying it. However, nothing else worked so I tried it and successfully connected to this database without blowing up either computer. If you do decide to try searching the Ham Radio Callbook, be sure you know how to use the telnet escape sequence before logging on because it's very hard to stop a search once it is started and you might want to be able to close the connection. Using the /port=numeric_code has enabled me to successfully connect to the University of Konstanz in Germany: telnet polydos-uni-konstanz.de /port=775 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Liverpool Public Library in New York state is in the forefront of telecommunications for public libraries and library users.
