At that time the newsletter was a small time affair and mailing it to the folks who had been to the Internet workshops and the few contacts I had on the network was easy. Too easy. Before going off to teach one evening I decided to offer copies of the newsletter to members of two mailing lists that I thought might be interested. A few hours later I came home to find 80 messages waiting for me. Even more followed. At this point the newsletter has subscribers in Australia, Canada, Finland, Israel, Netherlands, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and all around the United States. Thank you for your interest and kind comments. Please be patient while I work out the distribution glitches. If anyone knows of a kindly computer center with the listserv software that would like to play host to this newsletter, please contact me. There are lots of ways to add value to an OPAC, such as including easy to understand help files, a list of phone and email contacts for library staff, in-house or commercial data- bases, access to the shelflist, etc. CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY offers a selection of in-house bibliographies that show the wit and intelligence of an expert library staff. The search- able database includes guides to preparing a resume and writing a research paper as well a subject area bibliographies in a variety of disciplines such as architecture, computers, history, and psychology. One of the attractive features of this resource is the MAIL command which sends ASCII copies of the bibliographies to any network mail address. A minor criticism of this excellent resource - some of the bibliographies need updating to match the new holdings at CMU. UNT's Accessing On-line Bibliographic Databases by Billy Barron is updated frequently and contains a number of useful features such as guides to various telnet escape sequences and OPAC software commands. My Internet Library guide has two virtues: it's shorter than the others and it tells where some of the "goodies" are located. A new version is available in the LIBSOFT archive.
