The newsgroup which covers this stuff is comp.windows.ms or comp.windows.ms.programmer Look in the directory of servers for other searchable archives of MS Windows discussion. From the CICA readme file: ** Introduction The Internet site cica.cica.indiana.edu (129.79.20.22) is an anonymous-ftp clearinghouse for MicroSoft Windows (version 3.x only) applications, tips, utilities, drivers, bitmaps, etc. (The machine is a MicroVAX 3500 running 4.3 BSD Unix with 16Mb of main memory and 13GB shared file space.) CICA (Center for Innovative Computing Applications) currently maintains over sixty-two megabytes of PUBLIC DOMAIN and SHAREWARE Windows-related files. The files are *NOT* virus or trojan-checked, and by retrieving software from CICA, you assume full responsibility for their use on your machine(s). Ftp activity at CICA is relentless: Approximately 48,000 logins per month (or, an average of 1,625 ftp logins per day). Therefore users who access this site are URGED to do so during the non-load hours of 7pm to 7am Eastern Standard Time. Abuse of the system during load hours will not be tolerated. In its new format the BMCR will distribute reviews as they become available: that is, as soon as they have been submitted and gone through the minimal editorial massaging (inserting missing commas, removing libelous assertions) that we do. This means that e-subscribers will see periodic mail messages with a subject line something like: `BMCR: Nietzsche reviews Wilamowitz' -- you get the idea. Subscribers will be able to collect and download these as they come; at regular intervals (every couple of months), reviews already e-published will be gathered together, printed, and published in hard copy form. But e-BMCR will not be limited to reviews. From the outset, we had hoped that readers of BMCR would be stimulated to contribute a variety of other novelties: `Seen Elsewhere' (news items, reports of publications in other fields of interest to classicists), `Definite Articles' (reports of recent or not-so-recent scholarly articles that seem to be of particular merit, especially those that for reason of place of publication might escape wide notice), and the occasional quotation from Ennodius. Submissions in that vein have been disappointingly few; but for the electronic medium, we think and hope it will be easier to stimulate discussion. Reactions to reviews, for example, will be eagerly received (and we note with approval the favorable reaction to our incipient habit of publishing two or more reviews of the same book: let a hundred flowers bloom!). Subject to limitations of space in the hard copy publication, the `Best of e-BMCR' will appear in print in due time. It should be emphasized, however, that we do not envision e-BMCR becoming yet another electronic chat-line. If you are familiar with unmoderated lists (like IOUDAIOS@YORKVM1, which classicists should know about and many should listen to) or moderated lists (like HUMANIST@BROWNVM: ditto), you will regard e-BMCR as a `heavily-moderated list'. All submissions other than reviews will go to the electronic editor (O'Donnell), who will collect them, do minimal editing, perhaps write back to contributors and suggest enhancements, and then distribute them in collected and readable form. Thus you will be spared not only the random queries (`Does anybody know how to do Greek in WordPerfect?') but also the flurry of fourteen different answers cascading into your e-mail box, several of which may actually be germane to the query. Queries will be welcome, but they will be relayed by the editor, and responses will be collected, winnowed, checked against each other, and `published' in a compact and usable form. In all, then, we would expect that e-BMCR would trespass on your e-mail box no more than three or four times a week with a single message; the total quantity of distribution will not be markedly greater than what is now the case with `old' BMCR, but instead of sending out 200K pigs bimonthly, we will send out convenient packs of pork rinds as the craving dictates. We hope that this relatively heavy editorial hand will maintain a level of quality and interest that will encourage subscribers to read the relatively small number of items they receive from us, not zap them unread along with binsful of other e-mail, as many of us do so much of the time already. *** To Subscribe: *** Send a mail message to MAILSERV@BRYNMAWR or (Internet form) MAILSERV@BRYNMAWR.EDU, with nothing written on the SUBJECT line and a single message line reading as follows: SUB BMCR-L Your Name Here Your name should be given in the form in which your e-mail account is registered. There is no need to add your e-mail address: the server takes it automatically from the header to your message. (Note please: Bryn Mawr College does not have the machinery or software to mount a LISTSERV of the sort you may be familiar with: the MAILSERV software is somewhat similar to a LISTSERV but less powerful and less interactive; so please note the idiosyncrasy of our instructions. In particular, if you need to stop e-BMCR mailings, you must UNSUB the list, you cannot do a NOMAIL command as you can with a LISTSERV.) *** Submissions: *** To submit material for e-BMCR, to propose books you might review, or to complain about editorial heavy-handedness, send ordinary e-mail to any of the following addresses (Bitnet form first, then Internet): BMCR@BRYNMAWR -- BMCR@BRYNMAWR.EDU HAM@BRYNMAWR -- HAM@BRYNMAWR.EDU JODONNEL@PENNSAS -- JODONNEL@PENNSAS.UPENN.EDU Snailmail address (esp. for hardcopy subscription requests containing checks!): *Bryn Mawr Classical Review* Thomas Library Bryn Mawr College Bryn Mawr, Pa. 19010 Daniel Tompkins (Temple University) *** Contact: *** BMCR@BRYNMAWR -- BMCR@BRYNMAWR.EDU HAM@BRYNMAWR -- HAM@BRYNMAWR.EDU JODONNEL@PENNSAS -- JODONNEL@PENNSAS.UPENN.EDU " ) (:source :version 3 :ip-name "wais.concert.net" :tcp-port 8000 :database-name "cert-clippings" :cost 0 :cost-unit :free :maintainer "abc@concert.net" :description "CERT Clippings. I have reformatted the list so that the entries look vaguely like UUCP map entries, in the hope that these are easy enough to read and to parse to make good sense of them. The ``uumap'' source (also on wais.cic.net) is in the same format, so if you find a system in this database and want some more information, that other one has it there. The anonymous FTP list is in a state of flux right now, with a new maintainer scheduled to come on line by the end of 1991. It's my hope that tools like WAIS will make it easier to search through. If the map entry format is at least reasonably suitable for most people, the entries themselves would be posted to comp.archives with Archive-name headers to make them easily stored with automatic archiving scripts. --Ed Edward Vielmetti emv@cic.net " ) (:source :version 3 :ip-address "128.2.209.13" :ip-name "alex.sp.cs.cmu.edu" :tcp-port 210 :database-name "readmes" :cost 0.00 :cost-unit :free :maintainer "Vincent.Cate@cs.cmu.edu" :description " The 'readmes' database lets you search README files from anonymous FTP sites all around the word. Since README files describe the contents of a directory, they frequently have the important keywords to allow you to find what you are looking for. The nice thing about this is that you do not need to know the name of the thing you are looking for, just some good keywords. How useful the README files are depends on quality of the description of the stuff in that directory. Some of the time all that the README file does is tell you how to FTP something (very sad). However, they are frequently very useful. It is fun that this Wide Area Information Server has collected its information from a very wide area. It is also fun that all of these places are adding stuff to my database without knowing it. Even better, their FTP servers are part of my filesystem without them knowing it (see below). Archie was used to find files with names containing 'README'. For each file Archie indicates a host, directory, and filename. These triples were converted into paths for my experimental filesystem, Alex. Alex gives me transparent read access to files in anonymous FTP sites. So once I had the filenames, I could go straight to waisindex. However, for reliability and performance reasons, I actually keep a copy of the files just for the readmes database. If anyone wants a copy of all of the README files (especially if you want to build your own database) just let me know and I will make a tar.Z file for you. This is approaching 30,000 README files and is already over 100 MB (still growing). In case it is not obvious, the first part of the path, after '/alex', contains the hostname with the most significant part first (like 'edu'). Since Alex is not yet released, you will have to figure out how much is the host name (note that 'pub' is a great clue) and FTP the files yourself. With Alex you can just grab the path with your mouse and go there (Alex is coming soon to a network near you). A similar database could be done for files matching 'Index', or for files matching '*.bib', or for all TechReports, or any other set of files out in anonymous FTP sites. If there is interest, I can do something else (or help someone else do something). I will probably do TechReports. Keywords: Resource Discovery, README, Alexandria, Carnegie Mellon, anonymous FTP, Alex, readmes, TechReports -- Vince Cate vac@cs.cmu.edu " ) (:source :version 3 :ip-address "128.214.6.100" :ip-name "wais.funet.fi" :tcp-port 210 :database-name "embnet/infogcg" :cost 0.00 :cost-unit :free :maintainer "harper@wais.funet.fi" :description "Server created with WAIS release 8 b3.1 on Oct 11 17:10:01 1991 by harper@wais.funet.fi These are the LOG files from the LISTSERV LIST INFO-GCG The files of type bio used in the index were: /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9001.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9002.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9003.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9004.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9005.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9006.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9007.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9008.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9009.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9010.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9011.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9012.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9101.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9102.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9103.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9104.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9105.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9106.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9107.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9108.dat /ftp/disk5/sci/molbio/databases/infogcg/infogcg9109.dat " ) (:source :version 3 :ip-address "128.214.6.100" :ip-name "wais.funet.fi" :tcp-port 210 :database-name "embnet/gbsoft" :cost 0.00 :cost-unit :free :maintainer "harper@wais.funet.fi" :description "Server created with WAIS release 8 b3.1 on Oct 9 16:09:10 1991 by harper@nic.funet.fi This source is a list of software that will work with Genbank database. What follows is part of the first message sent to the list, with the draft charter. In subsequent discussion the purposes and tactics have wandered some, but that's no matter; this first message has enough of the right words in it that a good search on directory of servers should locate it. --Ed Edward Vielmetti, emv@msen.com, emv@cic.net >From schwartz Fri May 24 09:39:38 1991 From: schwartz@cs.washington.edu (Mike Schwartz) Below is my first draft at a charter for the IRTF Research Group on Resource Discovery and Directory Service.... A. Introduction This research group will focus on the problem of supporting resource discovery and directory service in an administratively decentralized, wide area internet. The aim is to develop an architecture and a useful prototype, with which we can gain experience with real use in the global TCP/IP Internet.... Below is a list of potential test case applications, a list of some mechanisms to consider, a list of some proposed milestones for the group, and a list of advantages and disadvantages of various approaches, meant to stimulate discussion. B. Potential Test Case Applications A general, flexible architecture for resource discovery is certainly a useful goal, but to focus the efforts of this research group, one or more test cases can be used to demonstrate how a general architecture can be applied to specific instances. Some possible test cases include: 1. File discovery in WAN file systems (anonymous FTP, AFS, FTAM, etc.) 2. Network access point discovery for traveling researchers 3. Internet white pages (note: easier than general RD problem) 4. Network service discovery (Geog. Name Service, time & weather service, etc. Note: there don't seem to be enough of these to be interesting from the scalability perspective) 5. Internet access to scientific instruments 6. Discovery of current events via WAN distributed calendar system 7. National database discovery (NLM, retail products, etc. Note: there may not be enough of these to be interesting to the general user at present) 8. National Software Exchange (NASA/RIACS) C. Partial List of Mechanisms to Consider Below is a list of some of the existing applications and research efforts that may prove relevant to this research group: 1. Hierarchical repositories (DNS, X.500) 2. Directory registration and front end services (Schwartz' HNS, Comer's directory location service, Droms'/CNRI's KIS) 3. Monitoring/probing existing network infrastructure - Centralized services collecting information from network probing (McGill's 'archie' anon. FTP directory service) - Monitoring network traffic (NetFind seed database, various network management stations) - Probing using existing protocols and information sources (NetFind, Schwartz' network visualization work, Knowbots) 4. Levels of information quality (Schwartz' anon. FTP architecture) 5. Views, private name spaces (Tilde, Prospero, Jade, Plan 9, Schwartz' anon. FTP architecture) 6. Distributed indexing (Danzig, Research Libraries Group) 7. Multicast-based approaches (V and Sprite location services, Accetta's RLP, Schwartz' probabilistic YP protocol) 8. Resource self-registration (Legato's RAP, Sun's PortMapper) 9. Preference specification functions (Profile) 10. Traffic analysis-based interrelationship of information (Schwartz) 11. Curated/moderated documents and information sources - Centralized access (NNSC Internet resource guide) - Replicated copies (Granrose's anon. FTP list, comp.archives) 12. This server may be restricted in the future to paying customers. Use the search ``helpinfo'' to get a subject headings thesaurus and a list of periodicals indexed. The Index to Journalism Periodicals is a cross-referenced subject index produced on microfiche by the Graduate School of Journalism at The University of Western Ontario. It contains over 10,000 citations to articles from about forty trade, professional and academic journals related to journalism and mass communication. Most of the titles indexed are from Canada or the U.S.A., but some international journals are also indexed. References cover a broad range of subjects such as business aspects of the media, ethics, freedom of information, government regulation, labor relations, medicine coverage, technology and women in the media. Practical topics such as editing, investigative reporting, photojournalism and reporting are also included. The fiche version of Index to Journalism Periodicals is updated twice yearly, in the spring and fall. Each update is a complete cumulation of all material indexed to date. The price is $50.00 (plus $3.50 GST) for Canadian subscribers, or $70.00 (Canadian funds) for subscribers outside of Canada. Configuring a modem on a NeXT. SIMMS for NeXT. ----------------------------------------------------- Information about FAQ compilation: Every two weeks (depending on the phase of the moon) a number of postings are made to comp.sys.next.announce which are a compilation of answers to commonly asked questions in the comp.sys.next.* USENET groups. Not all questions appear, it is expected that readers have access to NeXT manuals, and access other on-line sources of information. The FAQ is broken into sections and posted separately. These sections focus on various aspects of the NeXT machine. Items that appear within sections are not in any particular order, and get added and removed over time. Posting the sections separately allows people to find the sections interesting to them quickly. It also allows sections to be easily masked by the news reading program (ie put FAQ.intro in the kill file). Within each section each question will be preceded by a Subject: field, allowing news readers to break up the file into seperate questions. Each question has its own unique number. FAQ.changes will contain any new or changed entries to the FAQ since the last posting. People wishing to minimize download times should consult this post first. The FAQ is kept on-line at several sites and may be retrieved at any time: plethora.media.mit.edu in pub/next/FAQ sonata.cc.purdue.edu in pub/next/FAQ srawgw.sra.co.jp [133.137.4.3] We are not affiliated with any of the companies mentioned in this posting. This reality has been recognized by many authors including well known experts of protein sequence analysis, R.F. Doolittle and A.M. Lesk. PROSITE is a compilation of sites and patterns found in protein sequences. Some of these patterns been published in the literature, but the majority have been developed, in the last two years, by the author. Originally this dictionary was conceived as part of the author's doctoral dissertation as well as an integral part of the PROSITE program in the PC/Gene sequence analysis software package. But, as many people have expressed their interest in this project, we have decided to make this work available on computer media as well as in a printed form. If you want to refer to PROSITE in a publication you can do so by citing: Bairoch A. PROSITE: a dictionary of sites and patterns in proteins. Nucleic Acids Res. 19:2241-2245(1991). This release of PROSITE contains 530 documentation entries that describe 605 different patterns including: Post-translational modifications Electron transport proteins Domains Other transport proteins DNA or RNA associated proteins Structural proteins Enzymes Receptors Oxidoreductases Cytokines and growth factors Transferases Hormones and active peptides Hydrolases Toxins Lyases Other proteins Isomerases Ligases Other Enzymes This WAIS source of the PROSITE dictionary has been created with the permission of Dr Amos Bairoch by Dr Tin Wee TAN, Dept of Biochemistry, (INTERNET: bchtantw@nuscc.nus.sg BITNET: bchtantw@nusvm.bitnet) and Dr Derek Kiong, Dept of Information Systems and Computer Science (isckbk@nuscc.nus.sg) National University of Singapore, Kent Ridge, Singapore 0511, and maintained on the Singapore TECHNET Unix at solomon.technet.sg (137.132.3.3). Newcomers are advised to use the keywords 'PROSITE' or 'help' or 'documentation' to find out more about the PROSITE dictionary. (Please see the section below on 'Additional Hints'.) For a list of where you can obtain the PROSITE database, please use the keywords 'obtain' or 'get'. For a list of software/programs that make use of PROSITE, please use the keywords 'software' or 'program'. For a detailed explanation of how this source was indexed, use the keyword 'WAISINDEX' to retrieve the entry or consult bchtantw@nuscc.nus.sg or isckbk@nuscc.nus.sg. Comments are warmly welcomed. For questions relating to the content of the PROSITE dictionary, you are requested to direct your queries to the copyright author of PROSITE, Dr Amos Bairoch (address given above). The entire database or entries within the database may be copied and redistributed freely, without advance permission, provided that its textual content is not modified. ADDITIONAL HINTS for getting the best out of this WAIS service. --------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Use a general term for an initial search. Eg if looking for chymotrypsin, start with protease. 2) Be careful when using the PDOC numbers. Note that the O is not the same as 0. 3) Because of the indexing software, keyword 'chymotrypsin', for instance, may not pick up entries without the exact word 'chymotrypsin', even though the word 'chymotrypsins' may be present. 4) To understand the way the entries are structured, please read the PROSITE documentation (keywords PROSITE documentation help). You might want to refine your search by including \"gif\" if you'd rather get the maps, or \"txt\" if you want the textual weather forecasts. You can even ask by city, but if I'm not server the text for that city, you won't get it. I used to superimpose the MAP outline (that can be found in CGRID.GIF) onto the satellite maps, but it seems to be rather bad, so I'm no longer doing it. Ask for \"txt\" and you'll get a list. If there's a place you'd like that you can't see let me know. If you have comments suggestions or wish to help, send mail to weather-server@quake.think.com Thank you. - The Weather Master " ) (:source :version 3 :ip-address "128.109.157.30" :ip-name "wais.oit.unc.edu" :tcp-port 210 :database-name "comp-windows-ms" :cost 0.00 :cost-unit :free :maintainer "fullton@samba.oit.unc.edu" :description "Server created with WAIS release 8 b3.1 on Feb 13 13:25:01 1992 by root@wais.oit.unc.edu newsgroup comp.windows.ms - information on Microsoft Windows graphic graphics environment programming applications operating system network " ) (:source :version 3 :database-name "wuarchive" :ip-name "wais.cic.net" :tcp-port 210 :cost 0.00 :cost-unit :free :maintainer "emv@cic.net" :description "Server created with WAIS release 8 b3.1 on Dec 11 14:34:55 1991 by emv@cedar.cic.net The directory listing of wuarchive.wustl.edu, updated nightly.
