Encyclopedia may be too all encompassing. My suggestion

Usenet Gazetteer - one of the definitions of gazetteer is a
geographical index or dictionary. An 18th century gazetter I read
once listed land area, population, and a description which seems
similar to what is in the Usenet Bible except we are talking about
newsgroups not countries/states.
