Donovan West Coast Representative 12424 Mill Street Petaluma, CA 94952 Street Fighter² by Todd Strasser based on the screenplay by Steven E. de Souza Newmarket Press 18 East 48th Street New York, NY 10017 The book, ³Street Fighter,² is a simple, fast-paced, action-packed tale with a colorful cast of characters. It follows the movie on whose screenplay it is based very closely, and anyone who enjoyed the film will find the same elements and spirit here. The dialogue and chronology of events are mirrored precisely, and the only differences are subtle points of emphasis. T. Hawk has a seemingly more prominent role in the book (although perhaps this is because the character was not identified until late in the movie, while in print every reference is by name), and Guileıs other loyal aide, Cammy, is featured less. One memorable scene from the movie was not mentioned at all, namely Balrog smashing open a high-tech locking mechanism, saving Cammy the trouble of placing a time-activated explosive device there. The descriptions setting each scene and playing out the action are well done, but for one recurring ³flaw,² blazingly apparent to any seasoned player of the hit arcade game that inspired the story. In the game, each of the sixteen fighters has at least one exaggerated, almost superhuman ³special technique² that adds individuality and character to their movements. The choreographers and set designers put in a healthy number of glimpses of these fighting techniques, and even other tongue-in-cheek references to the game, including a ³Capcom Barrel² and a joystick which the evil General M. Bison uses to blow up Guileıs speedboat. None of these references, save one, a ³shouryuken² (dragon punch) is mentioned in the novelization. The only other weakness is some of the descriptions which seem to indicate a bit less research regarding martial arts and/or familiarity with the game, ³Street Fighter II,² than this reviewer would have thought appropriate. For example, the term ³aikido split² is used to describe Ryu lashing out with an acrobatic flying maneuver kicking two opponents in their throats (nothing could be farther from aikido!). One amusing paragraph early in the novel is Cammyıs thoughts as she first lays eyes on Honda. She correctly suspects that Honda is a ³sumo wrestler² because of his size, and then goes on to think that his Hawaiian shirt should have been a giveaway. This makes no sense whatsoever, considering as 99.9% of sumotori are native Japanese, not Hawaiian. ³Street Fighter² is an enjoyable read, highly recommended to young fans of the game. Philip Stroffolino Reviewer Ole Doc Methuselah L. Ron Hubbard Bridge Publications, Inc. ISBN: 0-88404-824-1 $11.95 Shelley Glodowski Reviewer To a younger generation of readers and television commercial connoisseurs, L. Ron Hubbard is, perhaps, best known for his book entitled Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. Clearly a genius, L. Ron Hubbard became the nationıs youngest Eagle Scout at thirteen, logged over a quarter million miles traveling to Asia by age nineteen, studied engineering and mastered the art of piloting gliders and planes in college at George Washington University, and became President of the New York Chapter of the American Fiction Guild by age 25. Not only mastering the writing of science fiction, Mr. Hubbard also became infamous for penning Fear, which became a model for Stephen Kingıs style of horror. After a stint in the Navy during World War II, Mr. Hubbard produced the OLD DOC METHUSELAH stories for ASTOUNDING magazine under the pseudonym Rene Lafayette...to avoid overexposure; a feeling not shared in todayıs market. L. Ron Hubbard died in 1986, not before writing about DIANETICS for thirty years, publishing a blockbuster novel entitled Battlefield Earth, and finally a ten-volume series called Mission Earth. Mr. Hubbard also wrote Hollywood screenplays. His type of mind is something to be cherished, and evidently Bridge Publications agrees, for they have rereleased his spellbinding Ole Doc Methuselah stories in this lively volume. Ole Doc is a Soldier of Light, one of only six hundred doctors traveling through the galaxy with medical skills far beyond any ordinary doctors and no allegiance to any government. Ole Doc has a sidekick named Hippocrates, a four-armed gypsum eating being with the strength and memory of an android. Doc is between 700-1000 years old, and Hippocrates keeps him out of trouble and on his toes: That startled Ole Doc. He hadnıt been patronized that way for a long, long time. But more important‹he glanced into the mirror, over the table. He looked more closely. Well, he did look young. Thirty, maybe. And a glow began to creep up over him, and he looked back at her and saw her cascading glory of hair and the sweetness of her face‹ ³Master doctor!² Interrupted the unwelcome Hippocrates. ³The Earthman is gone.² Ole Doc Methuselah sets the standard for much of the science fiction to come after. The stories are edge-of-your-seat gripping plots with lots of ethics, wonderful contraptions, exotic worlds, and satisfying endings. L. Ron Hubbard was a true master. Where the Heart Is Billie Letts Warner Books Inc. ISBN: 0-446-51972-3 $17.95 Shelley Glodowski Reviewer Billie Letts weaves a world in Where the Heart Is that is truly an artistıs imprint upon everyday events and people. Novalee Nation is young, pregnant, and deserted by her immature and selfish boyfriend Willy Jack in Sequoyah, Oklahoma. She camps out in a Wal-Mart and builds a world for herself that is secure and solid, in spite of every possible tragedy befalling both herself, her irresistible child Americus, and her newfound friends. Novalee has never been given a break by anyone close to her: her mother ran out on her when she was small; she lived in a series of orphanages and foster homes; her boyfriend Willy Jack is a scummy con artist interested only in himself and the kick of the moment; she has no education; no friends; no money. Yet she manages to start from scratch with the help of newfound friends and overcome all her adversity. Novalee has strength of character that enables her to recognize bad events and transitory and the dreams to build a decent life for herself. Billie Letts is a young author who has already garnered the Walker Percy Award for her efforts on Where the Heart Is. Her book has been compared to The Bridges of Madison County, with a refreshing new tale at its heart. Where the Heart Is is a feel-good story, centered in Americaıs heartland, where dreams can still come true and people still care enough about each other to give a leg up when it is needed. The tone of Billie Lettsı writing can only be described as candid and charming, hitting the readerıs emotions at a basic level. Itıs feeling is also comparable to sitting at home on a Saturday night and listening the ³A Prairie Home Companion² with Garrison Keilor, where children are above average. The success of this novel has much to do with Lettıs infusion of a Zenlike view of the world that Novalee and her child, Americus, have. Novaleeıs conversations for Forney, her friend who may or may not turn out to be ³the one² constantly remind us of what is important, whether it be finding the perfect Christmas tree for Americusı first Christmas or getting over the lie that could ruin her life. Each turn of the page reminds the reader of what is at the heart of life, regardless of who a person is, where they were born, how much education they have. This is a wonderful, inspirational book that causes chuckles and tears. Itıs not always easy to read, because the truth often hurts. But it is a book that teaches us who we are in relation to other human beings, instead of what our status is in this society.
