Hi!
this one i have just found on debian-devel. i think
it makes sense for us too.

---------- Forwarded message ----------
Date: Sun, 2 Jun 96 16:08 PDT
From: Bruce Perens <bruce@pixar.com>
To: debian-devel@pixar.com
Subject: upload-rejected scripts

I just got three upload-rejected emails from Guy Maor's Incoming
processing program for my own packages. The reasons given make
sense (mostly missing .i386. in filenames, one out-of-date dchanges
format I think). Please try to cooperate with Guy and make your
uploads and .changes files match what the script expects to see.
The profit we get from this in the long term will be significant.
No more long waits for packages in Incoming to be processed.

	Thanks

Hi all,
I think the current upload situation for our m68k Debian is sort of
unbearable. For that reason, I negotiated with Sven Rudolph, Linux
FTP admin in Dresden, about moving our main upload site back to Germany.
As most Debian/m68k maintainers are in Germany, this should help in
upload speed without embarrasing anyone else. Currently our plans are
like this:

* Sven has been granted a 1 GB harddisk for Debian/m68k storage (I'm not
sure if this is ENTIRELY for us, but we should have enough space for
  a while anyway).
* He arranged with his computing centre that I can get a login there to
do the maintaining work (moving files from incoming to their final
resting place). It will take a few more days until I have that login,
sending back and forth snail mail (we are in Germany, including german
  bureaucracy ;-).
* Once we have this done, I'll do my best to remote-assort the uploaded
files (I'll try to get ahold of Guy's automatic upload scripts soon
to further automate this). Interactive working should be much better
inside the WiN (german research network) than working across the
  ocean. :-)
* What's still needed then is a kind of back-mirror to the new master,
whatever it will be. They should just have a special upload account then
that can write files directly to the unstable/binary-m68k tree,
'trusting' that I did the assorting correctly.
This means files are transported 3 times in total (initial upload to Dresden,
mirroring to new-master, back-mirroring to mirrors world-wide), but
I think that's not too bad.

I hope with these changes we'll be able to get new binary packages to
the 'important' people faster than waiting for something to happen in
the U.S.

Right now I just have one problem left: I have a partial local mirror of the
m68k uploads in the private/m68k/Incoming directory, but a few of the
larger files are still missing. I hope I get these mirrored before things
are moving again in the U.S., but if I'm not successful, you might have to
re-upload your stuff to Dresden then.

I'll keep you posted about when the change has taken place.

Any comments, questions, criticism..?
Frank

That sounds fine. Please correspond with Simon Shapiro <shimon@i-connect.net>
about mirroring your m68k working directory on master.debian.org .

just tell us which, when and where to... ;-))
you might want to skip the emacs files, these are really too large
(i needed a whole week to get them to master... :-( ). i'll upload
them to dresden ASAP.

> Any comments, questions, criticism..?

can we have a patches area in dresden? so that there are
binary-m68k, source, and patches-m68k? even though they
should be filed to the bug-processing system.

upcoming which i will upload as soon as possible.

:-) I forgot to mention: that was the reason they were marked with an
asteriks (and I wanted to ask just if they were obsolete. Sorry, still
somewhat jetlagged ...)
No problems with the ncurses-[base,term] being a higher version than the
rest?

Another question I forgot: all those packages named <pkg>-<ver>.m68k.deb
should be renamed to <pkg>-<ver>.deb when moved to the target dirs?

And finally: has anyone looked at the 'err' file in Incoming? Some error
messages there seem obvious (no Maintainer entry in debian.control), some
less obvious ('i know 1.4, 1.5'). Can anyone shed some light on that issue?

Anyway, I'll start cleaning up the obsolete versions first, and move the
stuff away later.

	Michael

[sorry if you receive this twice... mail problems]
[CC to Guy Maor set!]

Hello all!
after about 2 1/2 months of an unprocessed incoming there are now
(as it seems) 3 seperate actions going on.
 - Michael Schmitz has a fairly good connection to master and has
volunteered to clear our incomming. unfortunately he can do
this job only until the end of the month.
 - Guy Maor wrote an upload processing script which should be able
to process uploads for every architecture. but i'm not sure how
far this script is with multiarchitecture uploads. Guy, you have
said you will write an how-to-upload document, but it seems that
i have missed it, could you resend it to me/us?
 - Frank Neumann and Sven Rudolph are moving the m68k area back to
europe, so that the incoming processing is easier to maintain
   for us.

hmm, i think we should coordinate the work a little bit... :-)))

for me, i would vote for the uploading script from Guy at least
in the long run. So the question is how long will it take to get
the uploading automated for us. Guy? it seems that the script
did already run on our incoming once?

up to then i would say that Michael is clearing our incoming on master,
and if it's going to the end of the month and the script isn't working
yet then we move the m68k uploading to dresden.

comments?

Well, bad/good luck or whatever. Different people with similar thoughts. :)

Well, certainly. :-)

I think item 2) and 3) don't have to exclude each other - we might put
up a similar script (or even Guy's) in Dresden to assort files
automatically (or at least semi-automatically) once it works ok.

Personally, I rather dislike having to upload to US as it's just too plain
slow for me from here (trying a traceroute - 15 hops, and I noticed that
often the only time I can connect to master at all is in the afternoon).
If there are no package maintainers from the US complaining heavily
now, I'd really vote for re-locating our "upload center" to Germany.

Of course, I'd agree to what most people agree (good old democracy :)

I have just been given a temporary account in Dresden (which will be
made permanent in a few days), so theoretically we could already start
uploads there right now (ok, give 2 days for me becoming comfortable in there).

I was not aware that the upload situation was so bad for you,
otherwise i would not have removed the incoming area at U-Mainz.

If you can arange the upload via Dresden, that is fine with me.

Actually master.debian.org is extremely slow for me too. And I'm at U
of Texas, a huge site. But I get consistent 25% packet loss to master
during the day, all dropped courtesy of alter.net. 15 hops for me too,
btw.

If it's a problem, do what Ian J does for the uk people. Everybody in
Germany upload to your local machine. Then it uploads once a day to
master.debian.org. Just send him some email, and he'll give you the
scripts to do it.

Sorry for taking a while to get back to you.

Anyway the script works fine on multiarchitecture uploads already. I'm
lazy though so haven't written the documentation YET!. It's extremely
easy though:

1. Rename your packages with dpkg-name.

2. Run dchanges to produce a changes file. You have to conform to
dchanges(5). A bit more info on this at the end of this email.

3. Upload the whole mess to Incoming.

4. Wait for email saying it's been rejected and installed.

5. If it's been rejected, you'll find what you've uploaded in
Incoming/REJECT. You won't have to upload it again if the reason was a
bad .changes file or only part of the upload was corrupted.

6. If it's been installed, go have a beer. :)

I'll help Michael with this.

Don't do this yet. If Incoming gets processed every day or two, I
don't think this will be necessary.

> it seems that the script
> did already run on our incoming once?

Yeah, I tried to run the script, but your changes files were all very
old so didn't work. dinstall understands formats 1.4 and higher.

Be sure and read dchanges(5) as it documents the format. That's what I
went by when I wrote dinstall. dchanges itself is just an
implementation of dchanges(5). For example, I think it has a bug
producing binary only changes files, which is what you guys will
produce, but there's a patch in bug report 3104.

master is down right now (Argh! Why is it so flaky?) so I can't check
the exact reasons that your changes files were rejected. Here are some
I remember:

In the Architecture field, put m68k. Don't put source unless you're
uploading source. You shouldn't be.

In the Distribution field, put one of unstable, non-free, contib, or
experimental.

In the Binary field put the name of the package(s) you're uploading.

The Files section is most important.
For format 1.4 it's
<md5sum> <size> <section> <name>
For format 1.5 it's
<md5sum> <size> <section> <priority> <name>
It doesn't matter what you put in the section and priority fields as
I'll override them anyway. It's ok to just put `-' in both, and that's
what I suggest. One mistake I remember - only list the files you want
installed here. Some of you were listing source files here which of
course you weren't uploading.

For the Maintainer field, don't put the original maintainer; put
yourself. This field is used to figure out who get's the email.

Also, forget about the seperate m68k/Incoming. Put your uploads in the
main Incoming directory. But be extra careful to not overwrite
somebody else's files. So do 2 things:

1. Use dpkg-name to rename your deb files before uploading them.
2. Make sure your changes file has a unique name. Start it with m68k or
something else.

That's about it. I'll finish the documentation today and put it in
doc/package-developer today (I promise!).

i'll post the patch to debian-m68k tomorrow. with this change
dchanges works very nice, without it refuses to include the
Files-section, which is important.

never used dpkg-name, but i will try it.

the binary packages are uploaded as
   hello-1.3-6.m68k.deb
so i would propose the coresponding changes file to be
   hello-1.3-6.m68k.changes
is this ok?

Hi all!
here is the patch for dchanges-3.3, it's a simple typo.
without it, dchanges refuses to add the Files: section
if no .tar.gz file is included.

--------------------------------------------------------------
--- dchanges.~1~	Sat May 4 08:01:18 1996
+++ dchanges	Sat Jun  8 21:35:12 1996
@@ -217,7 +217,7 @@
   fi

   # output files
- if [ -n "${TAR_FILE}${DIFF_FILE}${UNK_FILES}" ]
+ if [ -n "${TAR_FILE}${DIFF_FILE}${UNK_FILES}${DEB_FILES}" ]
   then
     # figure out section
     if [ -z "$SECTION" ]
--------------------------------------------------------------

so the upload procedure is (corrected and simpliefied):
 - build binary package
 - run dchanges *.deb
 - edit the changes file, so that the maintainer field
shows your name and adress. this field is (in the .changes
file) a misnomer, a better name would be Signed-by: or
   Built-by:
 - rename the changes file from *.changes to *.m68k.changes
 - upload them to the intel upload area.

i've uploaded (without signing the .changes file)
   dpkg-1.2.3elf.m68k.changes
   dpkg-1.2.3elf.m68k.deb
   dpkg-1.2.3elf.m68k.nondebbin.tar.gz
to chiark.chu.cam.ac.uk (to use chiark cd to /pub/debian/private/project/
and read the README.how-to-upload) and will tell you what'll happen.

ciao

i know. it took me 2 weeks to upload the emacs packages... :-(

on the other hand: having two different places where people
move files in the distribution has some drawbacks, esp. if
files have to get moved from one section to another (as the
distribution maintainer decides, eg. think of the hkgerman
package).

if i understand some posts on debian-devel right there is an
upload facility running on a host in the uk (chiark? was it
Ian Jackson who set it up?), which simply forwards uploaded
files to the incoming area on master. if the tu-dresden could
set up such a service, i think this would be a good compromise.

The past couple of weeks I've been creating my own .deb files to create

the project, if needed.

[just checked - the files were still under alldone/, but not yet on
master]

When I read Guy's suggestion, I blushed - I really forgot about chiark, not
having used it for quite some time. In fact, at least from Oldenburg
connections to .uk are not all that bad - they are worse than Dresden,
but in evening hours I already got > 30 kBytes/sec., which is really
sufficient for me.

So I believe my proposal to move to Dresden as upload center should be..
hm..dumped. After all, if uploading/forwarding of m68k packages already
works via chiark without extra work for Ian, and if everyone else has
equally good connections to .uk, why should I dive into some extra work
just to make uploads slightly faster? I _do_ have enough work left. :-)

Thanks&sorry,
Frank

well, they are on master, in the intel incoming queue, waiting for

Hi Guy,

seems I missed the discussion about the new uploading / processing scheme for
the m68k uploads on the ML (though I'm sure I signed on there ...).
Juergen sent me a digest, so I'll add my piece of information here ...

1) What's been done so far: I started by moving the real old stuff (from
15-Mar-1996, without .changes files) to the target dierectories in
   /home/Debian/ftp/unstable/binary-m68k/
These have obviously been accepted by a cron job and appropriate links
   from unstable/msdos-m68k have been added.

After that, I edited all of the .changes files to reflect my rough guess
of a 1.4 format (that was before reading the dchanges(5) manpage) and
waited for things to happen. This has failed so far.

2) From your description of the uploading process I got from Juergen, I
see that the ./private/m68k/Incoming is no longer supported. Now two
things could be done: either use dpkg-name to change all the archive
names of the backlog files and move the stuff to private/project/Incoming,
or do it all by hand.

   $ dpkg-name
   bash: dpkg-name: command not found

suggests I do it by hand (but I will save the obsoleted files anyway).

I'll check all of the .deb files for errors in the control fields (but
there will be many, so it's just for the record ...) and ignore the
   .changes files (saving them again).

3) after that's done, all new uploads are strongly encouraged to use the
new naming scheme and dchanges format >= 1.5, and anything going to
./private/m68k/Incoming will be ignored by your dinstall script.

Can we live with that? Or is it absolutely required that incoming
packages are checked by your script (conformance of the md5sum, for
instance)? Still, I think I won't lose track of my work too fast for later
checking if that's required :-).

And one last remark: Though I'll be out of Basel from the end of June, I hope
I can have an eye on the m68k incoming stuff even after that date. So no
hard deadline from my side ...

	Michael

Howdy,

I've just started getting involved with you folks and have read the guidelines
for preparing packages, but I'm still a bit confused on a few points. Would
some kind sole set me straigt?

Let's suppose for an instant that I have about 75 .deb files compiled for us
m68k users. (I will be redoing some to add architecture to control files and
binary package names.)

1) Should I upload these to master?
2) What guidelines should be followed when doing this?
3) Is a "changes" file required for such an upload since nothing really
    changed?
4) If so, what should the "changes" file contain?

Thanks,

Leland Lucius

fine. can you send me the package names?
i will include them in the list, so that we can stop
working on these packages (at least up until the uploading
is reliable working ;-)

i resend the current list in my next mail.

> 1) Should I upload these to master?

please stay tuned a little bit longer. Michael is currently
processing our upload queue (more then 50 .deb files!)
and i don't want to give him more work as long as the old one
isn't done.

FYI: Guy has written an upload processing script which
should process our as well as the intel uploads automatically.
i've uploaded dpkg-1.2.3elf.m68k.deb to the intel upload
area to test this. unfortunately this file was received
on master just in time _after_ dinstall ran last time.
now i'm waiting for the next run (this weekend?) to see
if this really works.

sorry for all the delays, the intel 1.1 release is to be
going out on monday so they have some other things to do. ;-))

> 2) What guidelines should be followed when doing this?

- rename the .deb file with dpkg-name
- use "dchanges -p *.m68k.deb" to create a changes file (format 1.[456])
- put your name and adress in the maintainer field
(it is _only_ used to send you an ack or an error report
for your upload. the real maintainer wouldn't like to
  receive this ;-))
- rename the *.changes file to *.m68k.changes (for uniqueness)
- upload the .m68k.deb files together with the .changes file
  to master.

> 3) Is a "changes" file required for such an upload since nothing really
> changed?

yes. the changes section is not so important, but the rest of
the file (length, md5-sum, ...) is used by dinstall for
consistency checks and therefore _is_ important.

> 4) If so, what should the "changes" file contain?

read dchanges(5). the programm 'dchanges' is only an
implementation of dchanges(5).

> (I will be redoing some to add architecture to control files and

please send the changes you did as bug report to

Hi all!
again the current list. when the upload processing works again
i think we can remove the list. nevertheless it might be useful
to have a list if someone works on a package which needs some
major porting effort. for any other packages it seem's better
to have a pool so that anyone can compile a new version and
upload it. when the turn around time is less then a week double
work is unlikely to occure often. comments?

---------------------------------------------------------
First Steps in Building Debian Linux Packages for m68k-linux

1. where to find the debian stuff?

primary site is ftp.debian.org:/debian, nevertheless you
should use one of the mirrors, eg:
  ftp.tower.net.au /pub/linux/debian (Australia)
  ftp.inf.tu-dresden.de /pub/os/linux/debian (Germany)
  ftp.caldera.com /pub/mirrors/debian (Utah)
  tsx-11.mit.edu /pub/linux/distributions/debian (Massachusetts)
(see there the file README.mirrors for a lot more)

the sources can be found in unstable/sources,
binary distributions are in unstable/binary-m68k

2. how to start with debian

first you need dpkg. find a file
  dpkg-<version>.m68k.nondebbin.tar.gz
and install it by untarring it from the
root directory.

after that you can (and must) use dpkg
to install dpkg again. get
   base/dpkg-<version>.deb
from the binary directory on the ftp archive
and type
   dpkg -i dpkg-<version>.deb

3. what if that doesn't work?

you probably have installed the watchtower
filesys. the getty on that filesys is broken.
replace it. FIXME: where to get a replacement?

4. how to build a binary package

First you have to get the debian source file
from the sources archive. for nearly every
package there is a .tar.gz file containing
the sources, patched for debian needs, and
a diff file with the changes of the package
relative to the original upstream version.

If you untar a debian source archive, you
will find some
   debian.*
files in it. to build a binary package just
type:
   ./debian.rules build
and then as root:
   ./debian.rules binary
the debian.rules file is a makefile with
   #!/usr/bin/make -f
in the first line. alternatively you can
also type
   make -f debian.rules build
and then as root
   make -f debian.rules binary

5. during build dpkg complains that an
Architecture field is missing

you will need to add one. ;-)
eg: add somewhere to the debian.control a line
   Architecture: =A
and to the debian.rules (somewhere at the top)
   arch=$(shell dpkg --print-architecture)
now change a line (at the binary target) from
   sed -e '2s/=V/$(version)/' ... \
     debian.changes >debian-tmp/DEBIAN/control
to
   sed -e '2s/=V/$(version)/' -e '3s/=A/$(arch)/' ... \
     debian.changes >debian-tmp/DEBIAN/control
(provided that the Architecture field is in line 3
of the control file).

generally, when you change the sources try to adapt
your changes to the style you find as close as possible.
this will make it easier to get the source maintainer
to include your patch to the next release.

5. during build dpkg complains that a
Section/Priority field is missing

ignore this warning. this is a bug the source
maintainer is surely also aware of, and on the
other hand it doesn't hurt by now.

4. how to name the package file

well, many packages follow different naming conventions.
simply use the dpkg-name prog from the latest dpkg package
to rename the .deb file. see man dpkg-name

5. how to prepare a package for uploading?

at first rename the binary packages with dpkg-name.

then run
   dchanges -p *.deb
to build a *.changes file. you have to edit the
Maintainer field to place your name and e-mail
address there, rather than that of the source
maintainer. this field is only used to send an
ack or an error log from the upload processing
back to you.

now rename the *.changes file to *.m68k.changes

6. dchanges doesn't add files section

you use dchanges-3.3. patch /usr/bin/dchanges with
----------------------------------------------------------------------
--- dchanges.~1~	Sat May 4 08:01:18 1996
+++ dchanges	Sat Jun  8 21:35:12 1996
@@ -217,7 +217,7 @@
   fi

   # output files
- if [ -n "${TAR_FILE}${DIFF_FILE}${UNK_FILES}" ]
+ if [ -n "${TAR_FILE}${DIFF_FILE}${UNK_FILES}${DEB_FILES}" ]
   then
     # figure out section
     if [ -z "$SECTION" ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------

7. where to upload files?

you need an account on master.debian.org to upload
your files. ask
  Simon Shapiro <Shimon@i-Connect.net>
(maintainer of master.debian.org) to install one.

at the moment no uploads should take place. we
have a backlog of 2 1/2 months which must be
processed first. there will be a notice when
uploading can be continued.

generally uploads should go to
   /pub/Debian/ftp/private/project/Incoming
which will be processed by a script (currently tested)
or to
  /pub/Debian/ftp/private/m68k/Incoming
where it will be processed by hand.

9. what files should be uploaded?

only the *.m68k.deb and *.m68k.changes files

10. where to do the patches i needed to build

if you had to change the source package you should
send the diffs you made as bug report to
   submit@bugs.debian.org
the first 2 lines of the _body_ should be
   Package: <package name>
   Version: <version>-<debian revision>
eg:
   Package: hello
   Version: 1.2.3-4
see also: doc/bug-reporting.txt on the ftp server

Hi all,

this is to notify the interested debian-68k community of completion of
the m68k-incoming cleanup work. Currently, only two packages are left in
/home/Debian/ftp/private/m68k/Incoming:

        398 Jun 7 10:42 gnuplot-3.5-4.changes
     234128 May 25 04:07 gnuplot-3.5-4.deb
        347 Jun 7 11:12 spline-1.0.changes
       6946 May 25 04:08 spline-1.0.deb

Reason: can't write to /home/Debian/ftp/debian/unstable/binary-m68k/math.

As far as I could gather, the future uploading strategy will differ from
the 'put it into /home/Debian/ftp/private/m68k/Incoming' style.
Guy Maor has finished working on the dinstall scripts that automagically
process uploaded packages, and now these scripts are capable of processing
all architecture's packages. Uploading of all packages should go to
/home/Debian/ftp/private/project/Incoming - but that's common to all
architectures now.

As far as I can see, all Intel guys happily use a naming scheme as
before, that is without a _i386 in all file names, with the sole
exception of the .deb files. So at least the names of our .changes files
will have to be changed to end with _m68k.changes. Source and diff
uploads are arch-independent, so they should overwrite each other ? :-)

If in doubt, drop conflicting stuff in /home/Debian/ftp/private/m68k/Incoming
and drop me a note. I'll try to resolve conflicts somehow.

Anyone out there to give the official 'Happy Uploading' signal?

	Michael

I tried the steps J=DCrgen told. I downloaded

   dpkg-1.1.2elf.nondebbin.tar.gz	(from ftp.phil.uni-sb.de)
dpkg-1.1.2elf.deb (from our local Debian mirror)

And extracted dpkg-1.1.2elf.nondebbin.tar.gz. Then I tried the `dpkg -i'.=
 I
added the `--force-depends' option because I didn't install the Debian li=
bc

Yes - the file /usr/info/dir (from the Gnu info package) is missing, and
install-info tries to add the dpkg.info nodes to it :-)

Gave me some headache some weeks ago, too ...

If you don't find a 'dir', I'll send one.

Next release date is in about 3 months: we try to establsish a 3 month
update cycle. So that would be the earliest date ...

Would be fine if it can be done by then. But at least a BETA release
should come before the end of the year :-) ...

As the m68k incoming queue is now completely cleaned up, the upload race
of all the people waiting with hundreds of new packages will begin soon.

Are you ready?

ok, Michael give us a yell if it's finished.

Leland has sent me a list of 95 (!) ready to upload .deb files,
some of which were already claimed by some of us, but that shouldn't
be a problem. so i would say, lets give him another 24 hours to
upload his stuff, so that we reduce the probability of conflicts
when two people try to upload the same package (esp. if it's going
via chiark).

Ok, that means Leland is on the pole position and everyone waits until
he's finished and yells in turn ?

Ok, I'll start this evening... got to go to work now B-(

But, just so I get it right (never done it b4):
I upload directly to private/project/Incoming correct?

What should I do with the files that are usable by ALL architectures
(ncurses has a couple).

Since I will be uploaded ".changes" files of packages that are already in
Incoming, should I include "m68k" in the name?

Thanks,

Leland

First Steps in Building Debian Linux Packages for m68k-linux
======================================================================

Version: 0.2
Date: Tue Jun 18 14:32:32 MET DST 1996
Author: Juergen Menden <menden@informatik.tu-muenchen.de>

======================================================================

0. Changes:

   * many, many, many. I hope this is now more readable and more
     informative.

======================================================================

1. Where to find the Debian stuff?

primary site is ftp.debian.org:/debian, nevertheless you should use
one of the mirrors, eg:

  ftp.tower.net.au /pub/linux/debian (Australia)
  ftp.inf.tu-dresden.de /pub/os/linux/debian (Germany)
  ftp.caldera.com /pub/mirrors/debian (Utah)
  tsx-11.mit.edu /pub/linux/distributions/debian (Massachusetts)

(see there the file README.mirrors for a lot more)

the sources can be found in unstable/sources, binary distributions are
in unstable/binary-m68k.

======================================================================

2. How to start with Debian?

first you need dpkg. get the file

  project/experimental/dpkg-<version>.m68k.nondebbin.tar.gz

from your debian mirror and install it by untarring it from the root
directory. after that you can (and must) use dpkg to install dpkg
again. get

   base/dpkg-<version>.deb

from the binary directory on the ftp archive
and type

   dpkg -i --force-depends dpkg-<version>.deb

======================================================================

3. What if that doesn't work?

if dpkg is dumped due to a SIGPIPE you probably have installed the
watchtower filesys. the getty on that filesys is broken. replace
it. FIXME: where to get a replacement?

On the other hand, if dpkg says

  [...]
  Setting up dpkg ...
install-info: failed to lock dir for editing! No such file or directory
  dpkg: error processing dpkg (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   dpkg

you miss the file /usr/info/dir. If you create an empty file (eg with
touch /usr/info/dir) this error should vanish.

======================================================================

4. How to build a binary package?

First you have to get the debian source file from the sources
archive. for nearly every package there is a .tar.gz file containing
the sources, patched for debian needs, and a diff file with the
changes of the package relative to the original upstream version.

If you untar a debian source archive, you will find some debian.*
files in it. to build a binary package just type:

   ./debian.rules build

and then as root:

   ./debian.rules binary

Why this? The debian.rules file is a makefile with

   #!/usr/bin/make -f

in the first line. so alternatively you can also type

   make -f debian.rules build

and then as root

   make -f debian.rules binary

======================================================================

5. During build dpkg complains that an Architecture field is missing!

you will need to add one. ;-) eg: add somewhere to the debian.control
a line

   Architecture: =A

and to the debian.rules (somewhere at the top)

   arch=$(shell dpkg --print-architecture)

now change a line (at the binary target) from

   sed -e '2s/=V/$(version)/' ... \
     debian.changes >debian-tmp/DEBIAN/control

to

   sed -e '2s/=V/$(version)/' -e '3s/=A/$(arch)/' ... \
     debian.changes >debian-tmp/DEBIAN/control

(provided that the Architecture field is in line 3 of the control
file).

Generally speeking, when you change the sources try to adapt your
changes to the style you find as close as possible. This will make it
easier to get the source maintainer to include your patch to the next
release.

======================================================================

6. During build dpkg complains that a Section/Priority field is
   missing!

Ignore this warning. this is a bug of your dpkg. upgrade!

======================================================================

7. How to name the package file?

Well, many packages follow different naming conventions. Simply use
the dpkg-name prog from the latest dpkg package to rename the .deb
file (see "man dpkg-name").

======================================================================

8. How to prepare a package for uploading?

At first rename the binary packages with dpkg-name. Then run

   dchanges -p *.deb

to build a *.changes file. You have to edit the Maintainer field to
place your name and e-mail address there, rather than that of the
source maintainer. This field is only used by the upload processing
script to send an ack or an error log back to you.

Now rename the *.changes file to *.m68k.changes.

Footnote: you can call the .changes file by any name you like, as
long as it ends with .changes. This is just a convention to avoid
conflicts.

======================================================================

9. dchanges doesn't add files section!

You use dchanges-3.3. Patch /usr/bin/dchanges with the following diff:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
--- dchanges.~1~	Sat May 4 08:01:18 1996
+++ dchanges	Sat Jun  8 21:35:12 1996

======================================================================

10. Where to upload files?

You need an account on master.debian.org to upload your files. Ask

    Simon Shapiro <Shimon@i-Connect.net>

(maintainer of master.debian.org) to give you one. Uploads should go
to

   /pub/Debian/ftp/private/project/Incoming

on master. This directory will be processed by a script, so a correct
.changes file is important

======================================================================

11. What files should be uploaded?

Only the *.m68k.deb and *.m68k.changes files.

======================================================================

12. Where to do the patches i needed to build?

If you had to change the source package you should send the diffs you
made as bug report to

   submit@bugs.debian.org

the first 2 lines of the _body_ should be

   Package: <source package name>
   Version: <version>-<debian revision>

eg:

   Package: hello
   Version: 1.2.3-4

See also doc/bug-reporting.txt on the ftp server.

======================================================================

13. Where do i get more information?

Generally it's good to read the files in doc/* on the ftp
server. Esp. in the doc/package-developer/ subdirectory. Also there
exist some mailing lists: First of all

   debian-68k@lists.debian.org

which is the home list of the m68k port. To subscribe, send a mail
with the word "subscribe" in the subject line to
debian-68k-request@lists.debian.org.

   debian-devel@lists.debian.org

is the general developers list of debian. As most bug reports and any
upload notices are forwarded to this list, there is really much
traffic. If you want to subscribe send mail to Bruce Perens
<bruce@pixar.com>.

See Juergens previous message: correct.

Caution with these - you probably mean ncurses-base and ncurses-term?

Current version of these is base/ncurses-base-1.9.9e-1.deb and
/misc/ncurses-term-1.9.9e-1.deb. Leave them away if yours are older versions.

(binaries are version 1.9.8a-5 currently)

Name them 'ncurses_1.9.9e-1.m68k.changes' ? Juergens 'First Steps'
mention something on this matter, too.

Remember to yell 'GO' when you're done - and be prepared for a downtime
of master.debian.org possibly on Wednesday night. Simon wants to install
Debian release 1.1 :-)

If the package has already been uploaded by its primary maintainer, you
should probably not upload the .all.deb . Also, if you haven't changed
the source, you should probably leave the original source in place. If
you _have_ changed the source, you should probably send a patch to the
primary maintainer.

The changes file should have the suffix .m68k.changes .

If dchanges is balky about any of this, please write to Guy Maor
<maor@ece.utexas.edu> .

Hi,
I just checked the current situation under unstable/binary-m68k,
and it looks as if Michael has done a pretty nice job there.
Only one thing: I did not find 'ncftp-2.3.0-2.m68k.deb' there,
but it must have been uploaded some time earlier because I had once
mirrored it to a local site. :-)
So, if it got lost during the re-arrangements, the port maintainer
of ncftp might want to re-upload it (Hartmut?).

Hi!

For the pole position he must upload 203 packages. :-)

I've uploaded all the packages I have ready, so who ever is next...

Does someone else have an ldso-1.7.14-4? Mine works just just fine, but I
had to make quite a few changes to the debian.preinst script since it
included an i386 binary. I will be sending my patches to the maintainer
'cause the 1.8.0 version has the same "problem".

Anyway, I sure hope they are all correct!!! PLEASE, mail me if you find
problems.

Thanks,

Leland Lucius

Hi!

I think dpkg will run with this file but the dir file contains a
directory file for the info browser of the texinfo system. So You
may run into problems using 'info'.

Many days ago I had the same problems and found a little script
in a texinfo distribution. Running this script reads Your /usr/info
directory and creates a proper 'dir' file on it. Afterwards dpkg
did fine! :-)

I suppose using the above mentioned 'dir' dpgk will work fine
also but running 'info' you'll get some links to info pages Your
filesystem does not include!

I don't remember the name of the script ... long time ... and my
Amiga is at home ...

But I'll look for it and post it here if I hadn't deleted it yet.

Bye
     Frank

Checking.. *WOW*. Ugh. Lots. :-)

Ok, funny thing is just today I finally compiled part of 'my' packages
and made them ready for upload (bdflush, debianutils, kbd, loginutils),
but now I see I was too slow. :-}

Ok, now I'll have to finish util-linux, I guess..

Will do so. But first I'll have to wait that they get assorted on master
and mirrored around the world (I won't try to get them all from master).

Well done so far,
Frank

Link added (both old and new version now point to ../../binary-all/...).

Link updated to point to ../../binary-all/devel/dchanges-3.4.deb.

Go on uploading :-) But I didn't find any new package in the directories,
they're all in Incoming yet. Cross your fingers:

i've said to Michael that he should simply delete packages which
make too much problems, maybe ncftp is one of them. Michael?

anyway, i think everyone should check if his uploads are correctly
moved and whether it's still the latest version.

well, here is the dir file not encoded:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-*- Text -*-
This is the file .../info/dir, which contains the topmost node of
the Info hierarchy. The first time you invoke Info you start off
looking at that node, which is (dir)Top.

File: dir	Node: Top	This is the top of the INFO tree
This (the Directory node) gives a menu of major topics. Typing "d"
returns here, "q" exits, "?" lists all INFO commands, "h" gives a
primer for first-timers, "mTexinfo<Return>" visits Texinfo topic,
  etc.
Or click mouse button 2 on a menu item or cross reference to select
  it.
--- PLEASE ADD DOCUMENTATION TO THIS TREE. (See INFO topic first.) ---

In Debian Linux, Info \`dir' entries are added with the command
\`install-info'. Please refer to install-info(8) for usage details.

* Menu: The list of major topics begins on the next line.

General Commands

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

i do not see any "info" entry in this dir. what do you mean?

well, but install-info has it's own thoughts about the
structure of a dir file. it's better to use this one.

local info files should go to /usr/local/info, the dir file
there might be in any format you like.

this one i do not understand. ?!?!

bad. i think, this is a bug in dpkg. here is the dir file
which is provided by the base package (in postrm if someone

please look at the incoming before you upload anything.
i'm sure there are some conflicts... ;-)

please do so. i've once uploaded the ldso and looked at the -4, but
the hack with the binary in the ldso preinst script (to test if elf
is running) is really a bad hack. please ask the maintainer to talk
with Ian Jackson (maintainer of dpkg) for a solution of this (there
was a similar test in the preinst of dpkg!).

maybe there should be a completely different preinst for m68k,
maybe the tests for an elf system can be skipped now that the
full-elf 1.1 release is out.

thanks,

Hi!
i've checked the binary-m68k against the binary-all and have
discovered 2 inconsistencies.
   binary-m68k/editors/emacs-el*
should be a link to ../../binary-all/editors/emacs-el... (newer version)

and the link
   binary-m68k/devel/dchanges-3.3.deb
is stale, as in binary-all dchanges-3.4 has arrived (which is missing
in binary-m68k). this might be a problem with dinstall.

Michael, can you correct this if it also occurs on master (currently
down;-( )

Hi,
Michael Schmitz asked me about my progress with util-linux, so I thought
I'd better tell you all what is still missing for m68k -

Some of the programs should IMHO be completely left out of the
m68k version because they don't make sense at all, they're not going
to ever work for us etc. Some of them are not included in the .deb
archives anyway, but './debian.rules binary' tries to build them,
so modifications to the Makefiles are required:

- sys-utils/
cytune (we have no cyclades board, dump it)
lpcntl (we have no way to set IRQs for parallel ports, do we?)
            rdev (also: ramsize.8, rootflags.8, swapdev.8, vidmode.8)
(we have no way to put such information into the kernel
               image, do we?)

- disk-utils/
            cfdisk
            fdisk
(both of these heavily depend on the structure of partitioning information
on the harddisk, and using this e.g. on an Amiga will ruin your data
pretty quickly). I think Joerg Dorchain once started an fdisk for Amiga,
but I guess right now the safest way to partition a harddisk is to use
the native tools (HDToolBox for the Amiga, <..??..> for the Atari).

The following programs need modifications to work.

- disk-utils/
            fsck.minix
            mkfs.minix

These are patched with Andreas' old patches, including V2 support.
Problem here: The superblock structures etc. in include/linux/minix*
differ in some places between 1.2.13pl10 and pre-2.0.14 kernel versions.
What should we do? My suggestion is: Modify 1.2.13pl10's include files
to be 'up to date'. This will be easier than convincing Linus to modify
his 2.0 tree. :-) This also requires updating the patch a little here
and there, I did so this evening (needs testing, though).

I also noticed that the difference in the superblock structure might
affect people with older Minix filesystems (maybe Atari users with
Mint?). The last 3 or 4 members of the structures are in different places,
so 'old' filesystems might not work with new kernels (sounds familiar, he? :)

         setfdprm

This needs a few ioctl()s on floppy devices:
 FDGETPRM
 FDSETPRM
 FDCLRPRM
 FDDEFPRM
 FDMSGON
 FDMSGOFF
 [FDMEDCNG]

Those are already present in the Atari floppy driver, but the
Amiga driver needs FDCLRPRM, FDMSGON and FDMSGOFF. Shouldn't
be too hard.

fdformat (I still need to check whether the FILLBYTE that Juergen
suggested to me works ok for Amiga, too).

- sys-utils/
clock (got the patch, but need to check if the patched version
                 still works ok on x86)

           kbdrate (see clock)

setserial (gave a few warnings during compilation.. not sure)

           sync (got a patch, done)

           tunelp
needs a few ioctl()s:

  LPGETSTATUS
  LPABORTOPEN
  LPCAREFUL
  LPRESET

Currently those ioctl()s are already in the kernel, but the code is
PC-specific (outb() and such stuff *shudder*), so trying to actually use
them might crash your machine.

Apart from this, I think it's time to start thinking about what extra
packages we need exclusively for m68k. My idea is: Name that package
'debian68k-utils', and put (at least) these programs into it:

setSCCserial
atafdformat (if required..?)
fbset
amiga/atari-lilo (?)

Generally, I'd like to raise the question whether packages should be
compiled with pre-2.0.14 includes or 1.2.13pl10 includes. The PC
Debian folks stated that Debian 1.1 will not support 1.2 kernels anymore.
That's fine for them, but I'm not sure whether our 2.0 is already stable
enough to permit doing the same for m68k.

Suggestions, additions, comments?

Frank
