Hi,

After I was informed how to rewrite screen's debian.rules and
debian.control to remove the hard-coded i386, I've now also
patched:

axe/
es/
gnuplot/
pixmap/
pstoedit/
transfig/
xaw3d/
xfig/

(and uploaded them to master).

They should now compile OK on the m68k (or whatever other architecture
you like).

gs and xosview are still waiting, but I want to correct other things
in those packages too, so that may take some time.

Then, the only package I maintain that isn't converted is "bin86", but
I'm ussuming the m68k team isn't too interested in that one..

Please let me know if any of the just uploaded packages
breaks anything on m68k,

(Im not subscribed to this list -- if you want to reply,
please do it to me personally).

Subject: Will there be a new list of maintainers posted?

well, as i see it there are two kinds of packages, some simply
have to be recompiled, others do need some more porting.

for the easy ones: i do not think we should statically allocate
them to a specific maintainer, anyone can compile them at any
time. just make sure that they don't already exist in incoming
when you upload them. (send an article to the list during uploading?)

the difficult ones: if someone encounters such a package and
wants to work on it, (s)he might want to tell the people. so
the list should only include these packages.

if you agree the list will be rather short, which IMO is good. ;-)
currently i know only of util-linux being difficult. I'm not sure
with netbase/netstd (they seem so, but i havn't tried them. hartmut?)
and kbd (keymaps for atari/amiga in various languages, Frank?)?

what do you think of it? the current list would be a one-liner. ;-)

Hi!

I don't know if it was always sayed, but the lpr Packages in Incoming
of master contains i386 binaries (the m68k Packages :-)). It should be
removed and someone should upload a new one.

Second: I think, the xforms - Packges is for other then i386 not avaible (as sourcecode). Is it so? Has someone contact to the Maintainer and can discuss it with him?

Is this the only one Packages, which is only for i386?

Will somebody make the TeX packages? Which packages are missing, to generate
a full debian distribution?

So far,

I already sent a mail to the xforms guys some weeks ago (I wanted to try LyX),
but they didn't respond.

Looks like the Netscape problem: they won't answer unless we flood them with
mails :-)

Yes. Forget it :-(
I asked some months ago, but they aren't interested in a Linux68k port
and won't give you the source code. Really. :-(

If some of you feel bored, having nothing to do :-), I suggest putting
together/debianizing a new, m68k-specific package, which I'd call
debian68k-utils or alike, as I had suggested earlier. It would consist of
at least:

setSCCserial
fbset
atafdformat(?)
amiga/atari-lilo (not sure)

This package should go into the "base" section. Volunteers? Shouldn't be
too hard, copy the debian.* files from other packages, decide on where
to put the programs (fbset into /bin..?), compile&upload.

As Hartmut told me, he always checks/compiles new versions of those two
packages from Peter Tobias even before they are released, so these seem to
be just fine.

> and kbd (keymaps for atari/amiga in various languages, Frank?)?

Leland Lucius compiled and uploaded kbd-0.91-2 which contains all changes
and keymaps I collected and sent to Dominik Kubla. Ok, there is already
a kbd-0.91-3 now, but that shouldn't be a problem.

(It took so long more from me putting it off than from any problems. B-))

I have a completely Debian system, no non-Debian files other than shell
profiles and the like.

The hardest part of setting up the whole thing was making dpkg install
packages onto a new root partition. Even though dpkg allows you to
specify the root partition, it doesn't really function quite right. (I
probably wasn't doing something right, though.) So what I did was create
the new root with just enough to boot from it and start installing
packages.

I also found that syslogd dumps core if you don't have a domainname set,
either with "domainname" or /etc/hosts. (Bug report submitted.)

I do have one question though, should we be submitting a patch to the
"base" package to include the m68k device nodes? I went ahead and
manually created them, which was really the only "modification" that I
HAD to do due to Debian lacking something.

Anyway, I've attached a list just to show what I've installed for the
heck of it.

Leland

BTW: This also brought out some problems with a few of the packages that
I uploaded to master. I had some old libraries in /usr/lib and some of
the packages picked these up during the build. I've corrected a couple
already, but if you find more PLEASE let me know (or re-up a new package
B-)). Thanks!

This may be of interest to the rest of the m68k team too:

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE

Use the latest package when recompiling for the m68k.

I mailed announcements of uploading a new es package with
the m68k changes in to changes@lists.debian.org, and
to m68k@lists.debian.org, and still Yamboo (Who calls himself Yamboo?)
tries to rebuild es-0.84-2, and fileing a bugreport against this
old package. es-0.84-3 has been on master's incomming at least
since last wednesday, so I don't see a reason why
suddenly on satterday, I need to get a bugreport against
es-0.84-2, saying that it doens't compile on the m68k.

Do any of my emails get through to the m68k team?

Anyway, I *do* very much value your work on the m68k project --
just please make use of the work I do for you too.

I know, and that's why I uploaded es-0.84-3.
The changes file to that version explicitly mentiones the m68k
patches that I put in.

> +	dpkg --build debian-tmp && dpkg-name -o -s .. debian-tmp.deb

Hey, this part I don't understand. What's the "&&" good for?
If the dpkg --build fails, the make wil halt anyway.

I know this change has been suggested to debian-devel, but
I fail to see what it's good for (OK, the "-o" to dpkg-name
is a good addition to the previous patch).

Thanks.

Again, sorry. I don't really know how I missed it, but I will double
check from now on.

And I "think" I've closed the bug report. Can't check it right now.

======================================================================
First Steps in Building Debian Linux Packages for m68k-linux
======================================================================

Version: 1.0
Date: Tue Jul 2 16:02:14 MET DST 1996
Author: Juergen Menden <menden@informatik.tu-muenchen.de>

======================================================================

0. Changes:

Tue Jul 2 16:02:14 MET DST 1996
   * submit bugs to maintonly@bugs.debian.org so that the people
     on debian-devel don't get upset
   * provide a correct /usr/info/dir file (with no entries)

Tue Jun 18 14:32:32 MET DST 1996
   * many, many, many. I hope this is now more readable and more
     informative.

======================================================================

1. Where to find the Debian stuff?

primary site is ftp.debian.org:/debian, nevertheless you should use
one of the mirrors, eg:

  ftp.tower.net.au /pub/linux/debian (Australia)
  ftp.inf.tu-dresden.de /pub/os/linux/debian (Germany)
  ftp.caldera.com /pub/mirrors/debian (Utah)
  tsx-11.mit.edu /pub/linux/distributions/debian (Massachusetts)

(see there the file README.mirrors for a lot more)

the sources can be found in unstable/sources, binary distributions are
in unstable/binary-m68k.

======================================================================

2. How to start with Debian?

first you need dpkg. get the file

  project/experimental/dpkg-<version>.m68k.nondebbin.tar.gz

from your debian mirror and install it by untarring it from the root
directory. after that you can (and must) use dpkg to install dpkg
again. get

   base/dpkg-<version>.deb

from the binary directory on the ftp archive
and type

   dpkg -i --force-depends dpkg-<version>.deb

======================================================================

3. What if that doesn't work?

if dpkg is dumped due to a SIGPIPE you probably have installed the
watchtower filesys. the getty on that filesys is broken. replace
it. FIXME: where to get a replacement?

On the other hand, if dpkg says

  [...]
  Setting up dpkg ...
install-info: failed to lock dir for editing! No such file or directory
  dpkg: error processing dpkg (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   dpkg

you miss the file /usr/info/dir. In that case, take this
one (which is in general a very good idea, so move your
local info files in /usr/local/info and use this empty dir
file)

4. How to build a binary package?

First you have to get the debian source file from the sources
archive. for nearly every package there is a .tar.gz file containing
the sources, patched for debian needs, and a diff file with the
changes of the package relative to the original upstream version.

If you untar a debian source archive, you will find some debian.*
files in it. to build a binary package just type:

   ./debian.rules build

and then as root:

   ./debian.rules binary

Why this? The debian.rules file is a makefile with

   #!/usr/bin/make -f

in the first line. so alternatively you can also type

   make -f debian.rules build

and then as root

   make -f debian.rules binary

======================================================================

5. During build dpkg complains that an Architecture field is missing!

you will need to add one. ;-) eg: add somewhere to the debian.control
a line

   Architecture: =A

and to the debian.rules (somewhere at the top)

   arch=$(shell dpkg --print-architecture)

now change a line (at the binary target) from

   sed -e '2s/=V/$(version)/' ... \
     debian.control >debian-tmp/DEBIAN/control

to

   sed -e '2s/=V/$(version)/' -e '3s/=A/$(arch)/' ... \
     debian.control >debian-tmp/DEBIAN/control

(provided that the Architecture field is in line 3 of the control
file).

Generally speeking, when you change the sources try to adapt your
changes to the style you find as close as possible. This will make it
easier to get the source maintainer to include your patch to the next
release.

======================================================================

6. During build dpkg complains that a Section/Priority field is
   missing!

Ignore this warning. this is a bug of your dpkg. upgrade!

======================================================================

7. How to name the package file?

Well, many packages follow different naming conventions. Simply use
the dpkg-name prog from the latest dpkg package to rename the .deb
file (see "man dpkg-name").

======================================================================

8. How to prepare a package for uploading?

At first rename the binary packages with dpkg-name. Then run

   dchanges -p *.deb

to build a *.changes file. You have to edit the Maintainer field to
place your name and e-mail address there, rather than that of the
source maintainer. This field is only used by the upload processing
script to send an ack or an error log back to you.

Now rename the *.changes file to *.m68k.changes.

Footnote: you can call the .changes file by any name you like, as
long as it ends with .changes. This is just a convention to avoid
conflicts.

======================================================================

9. dchanges doesn't add files section!

You use dchanges-3.3. Patch /usr/bin/dchanges with the following diff:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
--- dchanges.~1~	Sat May 4 08:01:18 1996
+++ dchanges	Sat Jun  8 21:35:12 1996

+ if [ -n "${TAR_FILE}${DIFF_FILE}${UNK_FILES}${DEB_FILES}" ]
   then
     # figure out section
     if [ -z "$SECTION" ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------

======================================================================

10. Where to upload files?

You need an account on master.debian.org to upload your files. Ask

    Simon Shapiro <Shimon@i-Connect.net>

(maintainer of master.debian.org) to give you one. Uploads should go
to

   /pub/Debian/ftp/private/project/Incoming

on master. This directory will be processed by a script, so a correct
.changes file is important

======================================================================

11. What files should be uploaded?

Only the *.m68k.deb and *.m68k.changes files.

======================================================================

12. Where to do the patches i needed to build?

If you had to change the source package you should send the diffs you
made as bug report to

   maintonly@bugs.debian.org

the first 2 lines of the _body_ _must_ be

   Package: <source package name>
   Version: <version>-<debian revision>

eg:

   Package: hello
   Version: 1.2.3-4

only if that doesn't work, resubmit the report to

   submit@bugs.debian.org

See also doc/bug-reporting.txt on the ftp server.

======================================================================

13. Where do i get more information?

Generally it's good to read the files in doc/* on the ftp
server. Esp. in the doc/package-developer/ subdirectory. Also there
exist some mailing lists: First of all

   debian-68k@lists.debian.org

which is the home list of the m68k port. To subscribe, send a mail
with the word "subscribe" in the subject line to
debian-68k-request@lists.debian.org.

   debian-devel@lists.debian.org

is the general developers list of debian. As most bug reports and any
upload notices are forwarded to this list, there is really much
traffic. If you want to subscribe send mail to Bruce Perens
<bruce@pixar.com>.

Hi all!

I search the 'normal' (newest) libc-5.xxxx on master in Incoming. It
isn't there!! Pic, dev and debug are there, but not this one!

Could someone upload it?

Second: the situation for debian-m68k maintainer ... I don't 'hang' on
'my' :-) netbase or netstd Packages. And i think, it is a good idee that
everyone can upload every packages (if it doesen't exist in incoming).
For little Packages it is no problem, but if the package is greater ... ??

I have direct access :-) to the i386 Maintainer (for netbase and netstd).
So, as long as i do the job, no other should do it. You are agree with me??

Thanks,

  Hartmut

Yes, please submit patches to create the 68k-specific devices in the base
package.

Also, please look over the basedisks.sh script in the boot-floppies package.
That will generate the minimal root needed to bootstrap a system, and will
pack it into a tar file. This will need some modification for the 68k,
mostly just changing the package list that it uses.

I'd also be interested in having you look over the rootdisk.sh script.

	Thanks

I was looking through MAKEDEV and came across the above problem. I'm
sure people have known about it for a while (I'm still new B-)), but if
we're going to be a part of the Debian project, we should probably nail
down the solution.

Of course, the easiest is to just change the Amiga mouse minor, but I
fear that there will be some Linux/68kers that don't plan to use Debian
and would not care for the change.

According to the devices.tex file in the kernel tree, there are actually
2 minors assigned to the Amiga mouse, 4 and 7. Do we ever plan on using
both? If not, couldn't we just start using 7 (source change of course)?

Anyway, I'll quite babbling now...

Thanks,

Leland

As part of the m68k infitration (B-)) into the Debian world, we must add
all of the Linux/68k specific modules to the "modconf" package. To this
end, I went through the kernel source and attempted to identify all of the
mods and the "insmod" arguments that each one supports.

Below you will find what I've come up with and was wondering if some of you
folks could take a quick look to see if I've missed anything or make
recommendations for better descriptions and the like.

Thanks,

Leland

Here's the list of modules:

Well, you're right. We'll definitely need to change the package list to
remove or replace:

lilo Different versions for Amiga and Atari and ...
mbr I don't think we need this at all, but don't quote me
syslinux	An Amiga version could be written, not sure about rest
util-linux	Still in the works, I believe

I believe that's the only packages that will cause problems, but what I
intend to do is try to get basedisk to create me a tar file. Then, I'll
clean off one of my partitions and see what happens.

But, here's a question for you. How are we going to handle different
package requirements for different architectures?

Will we have separate scripts for each architecture or have one script
that can handle the differences. Actually, I suppose separate package
lists would be adequate for basedisk.sh, but I haven't looked at the
other scripts yet.

>

I'll do that one a little bit later.

Anyway, I'm still tinkering. I'll have more info (and understanding) later.

Thanks,

Leland

ok. below is the new, revisited list:

This is the list of source packages which are difficult to port to
m68k-linux and for whom someone took over responsibility. If you work
on some of them please contact 'our' package maintainer first.

don't use the newer libs from Leland, if you still have installed
the ldso_1.7.14-1. this ld.so does not contain andreas' old patch so
it doesn't recognize the libs which are build useing the newer binutils.

phu, i thought i would never find the error when my machine started to
bomb on perl and /bin/sh. fortunately i had an old statically linked
bash at hand... :-))

I will upload a new ldso this weekend (if Leland hasn't already
uploaded one :-))

I started working on this yesterday. After a few modifications, basedisks.sh
almost runs through, but currently I have problems with the point
where /proc is mounted a second time in a chroot()ed environment. I just
get a segmentation fault here, I'll look into it. Patches will be
sent out soon. I hope the coming weekend will yield a lot of progress
(we're holding a Linux/m68k programmer's meeting here in Oldenburg).

> I'd also be interested in having you look over the rootdisk.sh script.

That will be the next step once the bases sytem (and probably already a
few other things) works ok.

Frank

PS: I really _did_ send off the util-linux patches to Guy (on Tuesday
instead of Sunday, sorry - had a disk read error). I did, however,
not send it to the bug reporting system because of its size (around
60 KBytes). I think Guy should soon release a new util-linux which
will then compile out of the box on m68k.

i've received some more patches for the ld.so this weekend, but as
i currently have no net access during weekends i havn't noticed
them till today.

so there will be another 24 hours delay, sorry.

I've been shying away from anything that requires X since I don't have X

I could do it, but currently I only have a XFree86 3.1.2Ec tree, which is alpha
and under some sort of beta testers agreement.

But I don't like to put the Debianized XFree sources (30434934 bytes) on floppy
to transport them to my machine. The transport of the 35 X11R6.1 floppies was
already too hard... Besides, Debian is still based on X11R6pl13, which is
obsolete ;-)

Sorry...

It would help if one of you would write a description of what hardware
Debian-68k will run on - if you would send that to me I can post it to
debian-announce, along with information on how to subscribe to the list.

Your patches are greatly appreciated. We're about to start building for
Alpha, and they have made the task much easier.

	Thanks

Not really related to llucias' message, but I installed the
libc5_5.2.18-9.deb package from unstable/binary-m68k/base on my
machine. I'd previously installed a (I believe self-made)
libc5-5.2.18-1.deb on my machine without problems.

The upshot is that installing libc5_5.2.18-9.deb killed my machine; no
new process could load the libc shared library. I eventually repaired
myself by downloading a libc-5.3.12 image from uni-erlangen and
installing it "manually". Most of the binaries on my system were
linked against 5.0.9, other than the ones which I had to recompile for
the new utmp format, which were linked against my 5.2.18.

I don't know if others have been able to get that deb archive to work,
but I thought that I'd point out my problem.

Regards,
 Hamish.

You need to get the new ld.so that Juergen uploaded. It supports the
newer binutils which I (unfortunately) had used to compile libc.

I don't know if the problems I went through during the last days are
related to yours, but I could imagine the right 'mix' of ld.so and libc
is/was your problem. I still did not really test the 'base system', but
I'm coming closer to it - the scripts to create the base.tar.gz already
work now, so the configuration steps done during installation (dinstall)
are the only step still missing.

What took me a while to find out was that when you want to run a command
in a chroot()ed environment, the 'new' / environment does not only have
to supply all required shared libraries, ld-linux.so and libdl, but also
the exact same versions (files, that is). Otherwise I always get a
segmentation fault. Ok, after a few thoughts: ld-linux is always 'running',
and if some pages of code are being brought in from the new root environment,
but the binary over there looks different from the one in the old /lib,
things can only go wrong.. ever seen 'text file is busy'? :}

Frank (hereby having said that he's still alive)

PS: I sent a mail to Peter Anvin (maintainer of the registered major/minor
device numbers) asking him to resolve our current minor id clash for
amigamouse vs. 'jbm'. Unfortunately he's on vacation until July 29th.

Has anyone sent Bruce a description? If not, I'll "try" to put something
together, but it probably won't be very accurate. B-)

able to use libraries compiled with the new binutils. i've uploaded
a new ld.so to master and at least since yesterday it should be in
unstable/binary-m68k/base. i've installed all base packages (and many
others) without problems with the new ld.so.

well, nevertheless i havn't already seen that package on the mirrors.
might take some more hours... :-))

ciao

Not yet - but I think one of the two candidates currently occupying minor
4 will have to be moved to another value. If it's going to be Amiga - oh
well, we'll just have to tell people about it often enough, right?

That's what worries me. B-) Actually, I would prefer that we change.
Then we can have both amigamouse minors together. (I know...dumb reason B-))

That's true, then we can have 7 and 8.

BTW, isn't it possible to warn the user with a printk if he uses 4, and remove
the warning after some releases? Cfr. when we changed the TERM from console to
linux?

Greetings,
