Hi, I guess we're going to see some activity arround :)

I'm insterested in the AXP Debian port. We've got a AXP system: 150 MHz,
32 RAM, #9 Video board, bus mouse, EISA SCSI controller, SCSI floppy, 3
SCSI HD's...

What I'd really like to know is how to start installing Linux/Debian on
this system. What I've read from Digital is to raw write the system/kernel
to the HD, and start building from there up, but HOW!!!??? Any
suggestions?

I'd love to dump this Windows NT crap... the machine is running @ 150 MHz,
and it looks like an old 486! I know, I know, "add memory", but that's a
no-no right now.

I've just brought up my UDB (233MHz 21066A) with RedHat 3.0.3. I've also
installed the 2.0.9 kernel, and the "elfball" distribution for compiling ELF
binaries with shared ELF libraries (my next step is to get this to actually
*work*...).

Sitting four feet away on the same home ethernet segment is my wife's Intel
box running Debian 1.1 (and Windows95, so I can test SMB networking). (And 4'
away on the other side is my SE/30, so I can test AppleTalk too.)

I'm willing to at *least* test packages. I'm hoping to also contribute some.
I assume the first Debian Alpha release will be ELF? How can I be the most
help right now?

Miquel Smoorenberg and Danny ter Haar have put up a system at Cistron,
they've installed Red Hat, and they are currently building the Debian base
packages on it. A few other people have mentioned that they have Alphas,
and I've suggested that they make the systems available for developers to
log in on, so that they can build their packages for Alpha whenever they
make a new release of the package.

Your first step would be to FTP Red Hat's Alpha port (or get a CD) and
install that on the system so that we have a bootstrap development
environment. Then, you'll need to install selected Debian packages as
they become available (libc, the compiler, an ELF-shared capable
kernel, etc.).

	Thanks

	Bruce

That sounds like a Jensen - runs nice with 32MB and Linux 2.0.* on it, I am
typing this message on one :-)

You must have *old* documentation. The Linux/Alpha FAQ can be fount at

http://www.azstarnet.com/~axplinux/

and describes an alternative method: use minlabel and copyboot from the WNT
ARC console to bootstrap the system, then install from NFS or CD.

If this fails, you need to attach a SCSI disk to a working Linux system
(Alpha or Intel), and use sdisklabel/swriteboot from the aboot-0.2 package
on ftp.azstarnet.com.

Note that you can not install Linux and NT on the *same* disk. And: NT 3.51
will overwrite your Linux bootblock during installation, even on a different
SCSI disk, so be sure to pull the plug if you ever need to re-install NT.
