INSTALLATION: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation consists of a few steps: A. Compiling the binaries B. Installing the binaries and default files C. Preparing the cd database directory D. Making /dev/cdrom a symlink to your actual device E. Read the manual pages F. Read the manual pages again G. Read the manual pages carefully! . . . Z. Enjoy! (-: A. Compiling the binaries ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are standard Makefiles to compile the source. Sorry, no imake till now. With those Makefiles the program should compile right out of the box if you are using a popular linux distribution. If not you have to fiddle with the Makefiles, or, worse, with the sourcecode. You can mail me the changes you made, so I can include them in further releases. (Any volunteer for adding imake support?) Have a look at config.h and the Makefile, maybe you will need to edit a few settings in there. Read the comments in those files for more info. Finally, to compile type: make depend; make B. Installing the binaries and default files ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you got no errors while compiling, type: make install You must be root for make install, or you will have to change the Makefile. By default, this will copy the binaries to /usr/local/bin, The X-default files will go to /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/ and the manpages end in /usr/local/man/man1/. You should look at the installed X-default files, they are well commented, and check if all settings match your taste. The manpages have a detailled description of all resources, please read them! C. Preparing the cd database directory ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have already a cd database which works with xmcd (another free cd-player requiring Motif), then all you have to do is to put the right path into /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/XPlaycd. If not, create a directory where you want to put your database, I suggest calling it cddb, and put the path into /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/XPlaycd. Note: There is a ready to use cd-database in xmcd format available on some ftp servers (I don't know where). This database will work with XPlaycd, but... If you live outside USA, you may notice that the database does not work for you. This is not a bug in xplaycd, xmcd won't work either. This is due to the fact that each cd manufacturer seems to produce slightly different discs. That means the track times may differ for a few tenths of a second. Badly, this will stop this database from working, so you will have to create it yourself. D. Making /dev/cdrom a symlink to your actual device ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- xplaycd uses /dev/cdrom to access your drive. If you don't have this file, you have to make a symbolic link from your cdrom device to /dev/cdrom. This can be done like this: Become root. cd /dev ln -s cdrom Fill in the devicename of your cdrom drive instead of . If you have a scsi cdrom, this is usually either sr0 or scd0. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When installation is complete, read the TROUBLESHOOTING in the manpage of the misbehaving program if something goes wrong.
