/etc/networks file

Introduction

In the same way it is possible to provide name for machines, it is possible to provide name for networks. This is useful when setting other configuration. It allows you to refer to network by name instead of number. Different tools such as netstat will translate IP network number to name using this file. You will want to use network by name in the NFS server configuration for one. This allows the specify a set of options for a complete network in one step.
