1. ssh and sshd

ssh is a "secure shell" available for Unix and other OSs. It is a replacement for rlogin. It offers secure authentication (The password does not pass in clear on the net) and full encryption and compression of the session. The later capability (compression) is a welcome feature when operating accross network with poor bandwidth.

ssh is the client tool and sshd is the server. It is recommend that the server be running all the time on your system.
