This file describes Xdenu 2.0 distribution.
Xdenu -- Use your pc as X terminal or full *n*x
Xdenu is Linux package with X server running from dos filesystem. Any
386 or better system with at least 4MB of memory and supported network
card can run local X server. Term and ppp (soon) modem support are
available.
Selecting files
Select self-extracting dos-archive according to your hard
disk. Linuzs.exe for SCSI-user and linuz.exe for others.
Select Xserver according to your display hardware. File xkits3 for S3
cards, xkitm32 for Mach 32, xkitm8 for Mach 8 and SVGA for others. For
sixteen color portables or for general vga there is VGA16 support
available as xkitv16. Add tail .tgz for real file name.
You can check if your display card is supported from
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/XFree86-HOWTO describes
Xserver more completely.
Extract linuz.exe on the root of your hard disk (i.e. C:\) and check
\linux\etc\loadlin\linux.bat for parameters. Cd to \linux\etc\loadlin
and run linux.bat.
Now linux should be up and running. You also have to know your
network configuration (ip-address, etc.), font server, xdm server,
etc. Ask your local gurus for these.
Running
Login as root and run setup or upgrade. Follow instructions.
Finally run X with commands startx and xin.
To install S3 X server say something like "upgrade /DOS/xkits3.tgz" to
the linux prompt. Same applies to other modules. Xdenu module is a
upgrade tar-file containing for example S3 X server (xkits3.tgz) or
serial line comminications promgram (termkit.tgz)
Shutting down
Kill your X by pressing ctrl-alt-backspace and reboot from text
console with ctrl-alt-del. After machine resets you can shut it down.
Extras
Basic Xdenu contains also various networking utilities as telnet
and ftp. Vi is also included for configuring by hand.
Almost full documentation is in Xdenu2.doc.
