XFIG & TRANSFIG --------------- The file xfig218.tgz contains the necessary documentation and files to run xfig 2.1.8 and transfig 2.1.8 on Linux. You will get the following executables when you install: fig2dev fig2ps2tex pic2tpic transfig xfig They will be placed in usr/X386/bin (a common place for Linux). The man pages for each of the above will be in usr/X386/man/man1 (another common place in Linux. Make sure you have /usr/X386/man in your MANPATH). The CompKeyDB file can be found in usr/X386/lib/X11/xfig so that you can program keyboard macros for xfig. You will also find additional documentation on xfig in that directory and several example files. If you intend to use xfig in combination with latex then read the file: /usr/X386/lib/X11/xfig/Doc/tex-strings-in-xfig and add the following alias to your list: alias lafig='xfig -specialtext -latexfonts -startlatexFont default' Remove the = sign if you are using tcsh instead of bash. If you intend to run xfig on a color machine then add the following to your .Xdefaults file: xfig*customization: -color The application default file for FIG are in the directory: /usr/X386/lib/X11/app-defaults under the files: Fig Fig-color So you can reconfigure all those things that bother you. As for additional information on transfig look at the directory: /usr/X386/lib/X11/transfig Xfig 2.1.8 ------------ Is better than its predecessors. Use it instead. A lot of stuff dealing with latex has been cleaned up since 2.1.6 and the hook to ghostscript is quite nice to doodle on encapsulated postscript files. You can also see text at any angle. You can do things which are hard to achieve in LaTeX with little effort (resizing math mode) and you can do things which are not possible on the professional drawing packages on the Mac. ---------- To install ---------- Go to the root directory of you system and su as root: su root cd / Then copy the xfig218.tgz to the root dir. cp /xfig218.tgz / If you use SLS: sysinstall -install xfig218 If you use Slackware: pkgtool Exit as root: exit ---------------------------------------------------------- If you ever wish to uninstall the package for some reason: ---------------------------------------------------------- Change a root and go to the root of your disk: su root cd / To uninstall from SLS: sysinstall -remove xfig218 To remove from Slackware: pkgtool XFIG COPYRIGHT -------------- Original Copyright (c) 1985 by Supoj Sutanthavibul Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell this software and its documentation for any purpose is hereby granted without fee, provided that the above copyright notice appear in all copies and that both that copyright notice and this permission notice appear in supporting docu- mentation.
