2001-07-14 -+- chme -+- chme@linux.se -+- Hm ... I think every how-to article is good, since it helps taking the newbie fear of linux away.

But:

To call this article "extremely detailed" is a bit misleading I think. You don't really explain what each step does, since it would take a lot of space and effort to explain how the kernel works, how modules work, and so on.

If this was the first article I read about how to compile a kernel, I would never have been able to understand what I did afterwards, and the kernel would probably not have worked.

I think a longer article that took more time to explain each step in newbie terms would have been a lot better. For instance, what does 'make bzImage modules' do? It is not obvious to a newbie.

Why don't you work on it a bit and post an updated version? I think the text is worth some more time and effort!

chme 2001-07-16 -+- pete -+- plavelle1@firstlinux.net -+- Brilliant article, realy detailed. but just one critisism. It would have been good if you had covered more than one distro, such as slackware for example.

For people like myself who have had some experience with kernel compilation this its not so much a problem as I compiled my first kernel in slackware, but it would seem a bit daunting to newbies migrating from OS'es such as Windows 98/2000

But then again who am I to critisise. Keep up the good work m8

2001-07-18 -+- Brian Kelsay -+- bkelsaynospam@home.com -+- I like seeing the full commands to type in the terminal, that is always more helpful than seeing "make a backup copy of the file." I would like to see some explaination of the options in compiling a kernel, and examples of why (you touched on speed and size) to compile your own kernel.
You also might want to include some details on obtaining a new kernel if this is geared to the newbie. They may have never used an FTP client, so a couple of example commands might help.
Later.

I am a complete newbie. I will save this document for later (many years from now). I am not going to touch the kernel I have now (RedHat 7.1). 2002-01-02 -+- Mauricio Vega -+- mavricio@vtr.net -+- I think the article provides just an idea of how easy is to compile a custom Linux Kernel. In my case, the article was a guide to do it, no more. I use Slackware 8 and the sources come with the config file of the pre-compiled kernel, so you have a guide or a backup if you mess up.

Anyway, the article helped me to compile a kernel to view ntfs partitions and to use my dear SoundBlaster AWE32 and to remove the configurations for the hardware that I don't have.

My suggestion for the author is: Please write an update of this article describing how to "play" with the options of configuration.

My suggestion to the newbies is that they don't have reasonable reasons to not try to compile their own custom kernel, so do it.

2002-01-10 -+- Anoop -+- anoop_chandran_79@yahoo.com -+- describing the steps involved in compiling the new kernel 2.4.x for a pentium 4 machine is highly appreciated ,especially the MTRR ,APIC,MSR etc..

BTB it's a good article . 2002-04-01 -+- SolarisCowboy -+- -+- Why compile SMP into your kernel when you only have 1 processor.

Don't compile stuff into the kernel that you don't need. 2002-06-13 -+- Val -+- vall@home.com -+- This is a great article. Even if you are a newby you could see that compiling a kernel isnt as daunting as it sounds. In this way it gives hope and motivates people to learn those things which they didnt understand. I am going to meess around with this in order to make a kernel for a different target. It would be usefull to see some explanations of the different options during config.
