2002-05-08 -+- Kelvin Chu -+- kelvin.chu@start.com.au -+- Hi Guys
I've seen alot of posts on Using Samba to authenticate Windows 2000 machines, but does anyone know whether a Linux machine can be configured to join a Windows 2000 domain?

Thanks in advance

Kelvin -+- 129.94.6.28 = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows 98) 2002-05-21 -+- Reezon -+- -+- Yes, it is possible, a Linux machine can be configured to join a Windows 2000 domain. Please look at sample file. This article contains the answer.
Viewing the sample configuration file, you can find the way to work when a PDC computer exists (not your Linux machine, it will be a simple client), and a way to use some parameters for authentication is explained.
You only need to think a little and solve the puzzle. -+- 67.17.5.25 = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0b; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.0.2914) 2002-05-21 -+- Sebastian Sasías -+- A Possible Mission -+- Hi, Kelvin.
Your question is very interesting, and fortunately the answer is a big "YES".
I'll give you a very summarized answer.
When your Linux machine is connected to a "Windows based Network", you need to have two functions:
1- Access to shared resources in the network.
2- Share resources on your computer.
Function 1, can be obtained by using commands as "smbmount" (see man smbmount).
This command is useful for access to disk units or directories, shared by SMB, and requires
parameters as username, workgroup, password, etc.
Function 2, can be obtained installing a "simple SAMBA" in your computer, with needed configuration to share directories or printers.
If you need a GUI program, LinNeighborhood is very good.

in the " smb.conf "

[Global]
security = domain

and you may add ur-samba-server to become a member of ur NT domain
so you may

1. in ur NT server, u should let ur-samba-pc be ur domain machine..
2. in ur-samba-server, u type command "smbpasswd -r ur-samba-server-name -j ur-NT-Domain"

and then ... u may find a file " MACHINE.SID " in /etc/samba or /etc (redhat 7.2 + samba 2.2.3)
but for samba 2.2.4 --- I am not sure...

and I thinks this is easy ....and "man" is very important
enjoy it....

if you have any ideas with the above, i'd love to here your views/advice.

From a different point of view, I'm more used to Netware servers and NDS. I know NDS is similar to LDAP, and I also know that Linux RH can authenticate from a linux LDAP server. But all the articles I read regarding LDAP seem to think I want to put up an online rolodex. I want to use Linux, multi-servers as so many businesses have today, as the servers, and SAMBA as the file-share software, but I only want to have the user accounts in one 'directory' accessible to all servers such as NDS.

I know all these software packages are out there for linux, but I don't know how to string them all together. Also, I have the RPM version of Samba, but LDAP support only seems to be compiled in?

Anyone have some info on these points?

I read this article with great interest, and would like to apply it to my environment. Currently, I have 20 Win95 PCs logging onto a Novell server. These PCs will soon be replaced with new, WinXP-powered PCs. So there is this suggestion to eliminate the Novell server. My preliminary plan is to join these PCs to a single workgroup, and one of the PC will be a "storage server". Each PC will login locally, and a script will map some drives from the storage server. So far so good, until my friend told me that Windows workgroup is limited to 10 users. That makes me googling the Internet, and found this article. It seems that I have found an alternative. My question is:
1) Will this Samba solution solves my 10-user limitation?
2) Will there be some compatibility problem since I'm using XP?
Need your feedback. Thank you. -+- 203.106.2.202 = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0; Avant Browser [avantbrowser.com]) 2003-03-16 -+- manber -+- razmanoor@yahoo.com -+- Hi there...
