GEDA - outstanding project - looks actually dead.:(
Scilab - works great, but the interface is ugly. (though easy to use, but colour..)

Debian Linux - probably best Distro around BUT it's magnificent package-managment system requires (usually) to do DEBs on your own.
Btw: misteriously Scilab is in distro, but marked as non-free ;)

Electrical engineer _not_ mentioned SPICE simulation software ? Doesn't look good...and try to get one on Debian :) I recommend SPICE OPUS - of course, if you can make a deb with it.

Including all Linux flaws - troubles with supporting national keyboard layouts & clipboard features in more than one grapical enviroment, poor performance as trouble-free desktop (unless someone does most of work for you), idea of using Linux simply

Great thing to learn, but for work... well, despite all efforts, professional tools still cost. A lot :(
