2005-02-10 -+- Engcheng -+- engcheng_sg@yahoo.com -+- I've personally tried the ParallelKnoppix couple of months back. In fact, due to the lack of resources, the entire test of 1 head node with 4 compute nodes were done through a single server, partitioned using vmware.

Credit must be given the to creator of ParallelKnoppix as from my personal point of view, he had done a good job. However, that does not spare from the painful truth that the distribution seems to be created for new programs to be compiled on the head node. Try this: Download some parallel processing programs off the net, ie. those used to monitor cluster behavior, you will notice the difficulties in getting them to work. I've emailed the author on this note who agreed that either a base OS had to be installed where rest of the MPI, LAM, Beowulf...will be install, or remastering is required.

Nevertheless, ParallelKnoppix had given me the great pleasure of starting my first real serious effort to look into parallel computing. :) -+- 165.21.154.13 = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 #2006-02-13 -+- Дед Фишкарь -+- -+- Parallel Knoppix не имеет компилятора фортран-90.

E Aquino G -+- nilvio @gmail.com -+- We are a group of scientist working in genetics that have chosen to remain under the radar until owr findings are validate by experiments and we have built functioning prototypes of genetic engineering devices that are far superior and simpler from the current modalities in used.

Our current proyect involves matching the sequenced genome of Arabidopsis Thaliana and Mycoplasma genitalis (the simplest genome maps available)to the phenotypical expression of known alterations in their milieu; afterwards we backtrack the phenotypical changes to the specific nitrogenated base sequence using parallel computing for protein folding and analysis.

The last step requires parallel computing which is beyond our means for now. We do have a lot of old and new desktops ; your program offers the solution for our problem and we wish to ask the following question regarding that issue:

What would be the minimum requirements of motherboard, CPU and memory needed to run our wide variety of desktops (286-386-486 and all varieties of pentiums, AMD and Xyrix)to run your program and achieve integration of our resources aiming parallel computing.

Thanks

Loved your article on parallel kinopex. Being graphically inclined, what avenues are there of using this technology in graphics intensive work such as rendering?

Is it possible to set multiple small pc's running linux to set one good maya on linux machine? Reason I ask is there are certain apps which do a great job only if you have multiple processors (unlike the multi node topology of the current render farms) -+- 213.42.2.25 = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4
