This directory [DOS] contains the essential DOS utilities, which reproduce
the functionality of DOS. See the FreeDOS specification, especially
Commands Behavior Appendix, (http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/spec/)
for more details. While we try to ensure it is updated as new
releases of the utilities are available, one may wish to view the
software list on FreeDOS.org (http://www.freedos.org/freedos/software/).
Please note the archives located/mirrored here are usually packaged
for individual use by the various maintainers, thus they may not all
have the same directory structure, nor are they intended for direct
use by the FreeDOS installer.

Generally each utility has its own subdirectory with zip files
of the source and binaries within. Older revisions are kept, which
due to 8.3 naming issues, some care should be taken to ensure the
latest release is actually downloaded. This also means some programs
are available that are now included within FreeCom (command.com) and
no longer need to be downloaded. If you wish to download the latest
available version of each in a single file, please try
../distributions/ripcord/LATEST/ FreeDOS.base.zip
alternately you may prefer to download the latest distribution and
update only those utilities with needed bug fixes/enhancements.

Questions, comments, or concerns regarding these contents may be
sent to Jim Hall (FreeDOS Coordinator) or Jeremy Davis (Distribution Guy);
however, for general FreeDOS related material or specific help, please
first read the material available at http://www.freedos.org and if
possible ask questions on the mailing lists, especially fd-dev@topica.com.
(List information may be found at http://www.freedos.org/freedos/join/
as most require joining to send messages, but reading archives does not.)
