There are several ways to read alt.chinese.text on different
systems. Most patrons do not have enough resources on their Unix
account to read alt.chinese.text online with cxterm/hztty.
Some lucky sites have cxterm/hztty installed as a service by
their system managers.

All is not lost if you have a PC connection to Unix.
Just install ZWDOS and then via the network or terminal
connection eg Rainbow,(public domain from University of Edinburgh)
or NCSA telnet; connect to your Unix workstation, start rn etc
and then browse online.
If you still can't read online but is not bothered about the
inconvenience, on rn,do this: save the file and mail to your
PC if you have a connected PC mailer (DOS only).

eg s | mail to:usernumber@somewhere.org

*This may not work on some sites because the tilde mark ~
gets corrupted by the mail hub usually to a caret ^.*

On the PC, activate ZWDOS and then start up your DOS mailer
eg. Pegasus emailer. ZWDOS doesn't support the Windows
graphical environment. You may now read your mail in Chinese.

Failing this, the file may still be saved on rn with "s filename"
and then downloaded to be read with NJstar or other
Chinese word processors that can read GB files. NJstar
has convenient HZ encoders and decoders to give you the
necessary GB files.Convert from Hz to GB first for other
Chinese word processors. There are Unix and PC based Hz2GB
and GB2Hz converters.

You may of course compose a GB file on NJstar and then
encode it to Hz before posting to alt.chinese.text etc.

The same principles hold for those who wish to communicate
in Chinese via email.

There are other ways of doing the same thing on the PC ie. reading
alt.chinese.text eg using NCTUTEL.EXE. Eten support will allow
you to browse Big5 formatted files.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

*****************************************************************************

Individual email queries will not be answered. Please direct
all queries to alt.chinese.text.

New Group: alt.chinese.text.big5

Configuration:
                                            zW2HZ,HZ2GB,GB2BIG
HZ, zW articles --> alt.chinese.text             |
BIG5  ------------> alt.chinese.text.big5        |
			                    GB2HZ, BIG2GB
After we set up this group, responses are too many to reply.

The following problems are asked most frequestly:

0) What is the purpose of this group ?
nntp transfer is 8-bits clean inherently unless
your sites may be across lines where only
7-bits transfers are allowed. Usenet in Taiwan
are 8 bits clean. Many of the articles are
written in BIG5 encoding. In order to adapt to
BIG5 usenet users and communicate with overseas
Chinese (inlcluding coming from mainland China,
Taiwan, Hong Kong,...), we think we have enough
audience of BIG5 users to support this group.

All articles of alt.chinese.text either in HZ or zW
will be gated to alt.chinese.text.big5 in form of
BIG5. And all articles of alt.chinese.text.big5 in
BIG5 will be fed to alt.chinese.text in HZ encoding.
The gateway for these two directions are completed
by the server "news.csie.nctu.edu.tw", and end
users won't sense the gateway process.

You need only to observe the conventions:
Post articles in alt.chinese.text in HZ or zW.
Port articles in alt.chinese.text.big5 in BIG5.
Their contents in these two groups are the same.

1) How can I view BIG5 chars from modem connections:
Most of the problems are due to your host system
configuration. In Taiwan, our terminal servers
with tty service from tel lines are set to
8-bits manually. But as we known, the setup
in UNIX by defaults is to pass 7-bits. So,
if you have already BIG5 Chinese system installed,
but can't view BIG5 code, you must negotiate with
your system admin to persuade them to set 8-bits
in the tty line. ( /etc/gettytab, and /etc/ttytab
   for SUN-OS)

2) How can I view (write) BIG code in PC ?
Try to get Chinese system for PC, such as
CWindow, ETen, KC. KC provide Taiwan users
with a free Chinese system. You can get
   it from
   moers2.edu.tw:/chinese-pub/chinese-sys/kc/kc.zip.
   You can try it.

3) How can I view BIG5 code from PC if I have Chinese
system installed, and I use "telnet" for connection
   from PC.
You must use 8-bits clean telnet. Try to get it
   from
   moers2.ecu.tw:/chinese-pub/ncsa/{ncu,nctu,itri,iii}
Or use "cutcp" (another NCSA )
Try to use archie to search the nearest site to
reach. (in cutcp, only rlogin is 8-bits clean)
   (nctuccca.edu.tw is a mirror site of moers2.edu.tw)

4) How can I view BIG5 code from X-window ?
Install cxterm. Please refer to FAQ of alt.chinese.text.
   try use
   "cxterm -hz BIG5 -fh hku-ch16"
You needn't run "hztty" to view BIG5.

5) After I setup all related things, why I still can't
   input BIG5 code ?
   stty pass8
      for BSD system
   stty -istrip
      for SYSV system

6) Why my gopher can't display BIG5 directories ?
Recompile your gopher by SVSV curses if your
sysetm is BSD system. For example, in SUN-OS,
   use CC=/usr/5bin/CC
       CFLAGS=-I/usr/5include
       LDFLAGS=-L/usr/5lib -lcurses -ltermcap
   setenv PAGER cless
      or use "more", or "pg"

7) Where can you get BIG5 stuff ?
   try
   cc.nsysu.edu.tw
   gopher.ccu.edu.tw
   gopher.csie.nctu.edu.tw

You can connect to the above servers by gopher
   or telnet and use "username=gopher".
(for gopehr.csie, use 4270 port instead)

8) Why my "elm" can't show BIG5 code ?
   try "setenv LC_CTYPE iso_8859_1" for elm 2.4 PL21.
and you can use builtin displayer.

smtp is also like nntp and normally is also
8-bits clean. But if the destination will
be routed through bitnet, or if your mailer
is not 8-bits clean, you can't mail BIG5 code.
   Try to uuencode in advance.

9) How can I post articles to alt.chinese.text.big5 ?
Just write your aritcles in BIG5 Chinese system
   and post as usual.
After your articles flow to news.csie.nctu.edu.tw,
it will convert your articles into HZ encoding
   and feed to alt.chinese.text.

If you have problems canceling articles
in both of the two groups, mail to us. Let us
   cancel them for you.

(alt.chinese.text.big5 is not moderated from now on)

10) How can I write "BIG5" subject in "tin" ?
You can edit "subject" line after entering editor.

11) How many editors supporting BIG5 editing ?
    Try "joe1.07", "celvis", "vi".

12) Can I use irc in BIG5 environment ?
Both sides run "hztty irc" . or get 8-bits
    clean patched irc, from
    cc.nsysu.edu.tw (forget)
    ftp.csie.nctu.edu.tw:/pub/unix/irc

    for talk, try "ctalk"
13) Why it is so hard to understand what has been
    in alt.chinese.text ? ( mostly asked by
    Taiwan students)
    ...........

That's just what I can remember now.... and
many many , too many to enumerate.....
Any supplement or corrections of incorrect information,
please write to "help@csie.nctu.edu.tw"

Sorry, if we can't reply to you for your problems to
us, please refer to this to see if we have answered
your questions.

The multi-lingual archives at The Computing Research Labs, New Mexico
State University will be moving to a new ftp address soon. The
archives are being put under control of the Consortium for Lexical
Research.

The new ftp address will be: clr.nmsu.edu (the current IP address
is 128.123.1.12 but may change, so use clr.nmsu.edu whenever
possible).

Please note that there is a difference between ftp sites crl.nmsu.edu and
clr.nmsu.edu. The crl.nmsu.edu site will be our ftp site for items
not related to the Consortium for Lexical Research.

The Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Indian, Japanese, Korean,
Tibetan, and Vietnamese archives will all be moved.

We will announce the new locations of the relevant directories once
the archives have been moved.

Please be patient if you discover directories missing when you ftp to
either crl.nmsu.edu or clr.nmsu.edu. It will take a few days to move
everything.

If you are not familiar with our multi-lingual archives, we have been
slowly collecting various software, fonts, and text for different
languages over the past 2 years. Most of the software is currently
Unix oriented. We would also like to encourage people to continue to
contribute items to the archives to help improve the quality and
quantity of multi-lingual tools.

If you have an item to contribute, please put it in:

clr.nmsu.edu:incoming/

and send a note to lexical@nmsu.edu telling them about your
contribution.

If you have any questions or comments, please send them to:
lexical@nmsu.edu

Most of the Chinese environements in Taiwan are using Big5 code and
articles in this group are in HZ. If users in Taiwan intend to
read TW Big5 news and at the same time read HZ code, they cannot
conveniently switch between environments. Using pipe through
different conversion tools is not very convenient. We provide
an "extra" service in our "gopher" server to let Twiwan users
view HZ articles directly. We convert HZ articles in alt.chinese.text
into BIG5 and repost them in our local groups. If you are using
BIG5 environment, you can try to read alt.chinese.text in BIG5 by
"gopher gopher.csie.nctu.edu.tw 70"
 or
"telnet gopher.csie.nctu.edu.tw 4270"

And select "Documents, FAQ, RFC,..." topic.
You must note your gopher or telnet client is 8-bits clean.
(gopher must be compiled by SYSV curses if you are using BSD systems)

Bugs: we cannot preserve author information as in the original form.
and you can't followup or post.
This service seems to be extraeous in some aspects. But if people don't
think so, we can allocate another service to let user post articles
in another group (in Taiwan local group) and this article will be
sent to a filter. It will convert BIG5 article into HZ automaticllay.
And repost into alt.chinese.text.
Viewing news articles through gopher won't be slow if you are in Taiwan.
Our gopher server takes advantage of "tin index" and it is just a
little slower than "tin" reader.

Any comments and suggestions please sent to "help@csie.nctu.edu.tw"

1. WHAT IS MULE?

Mule is a MULtilingual Enhancement to GNU Emacs. It can
handle not only ASCII characters (7 bits) and ISO Latin-1 (8
bits), but also Japanese, Chinese, Korean (16 bits) coded in
the ISO2022 standard and its variants (e.g. EUC, Compound
Text). For Chinese there is support for both GB and Big5.
In addition, now we provide new support for Thai based on
TIS620 which is non-ISO but quite popular in Thai.

A text buffer in Mule can contain a mixture of characters
from these languages. To input any of these characters, you
can use various input methods provided by Mule itself. In
addition, if you use Mule under some terminal emulator
(kterm, cxterm, or exterm), you can use any input methods
supported by the emulator.

2. SUPPORTED LANGUAGES

2.0 ENGLISH

Just type in. :-)

2.1 JAPANESE

It is strongly recommended to install Wnn4.108. EGG system
bundled with Mule can communicate with jserver of Wnn and
provide you a very convenient Japanese inputting method.
See 'doc/EGG' for the usage of this system.
You can run Mule as a client of X window, or run it under
some Japanese terminal (including such emulators as kterm and
exterm). In the latter case, you can use any inputting
methods supported by the terminal.
Among other inputting methods are:
	EGG-SJ3, CANNA (bundled with Mule)
	SKK, boiled-egg (in 'contrib' directory)

2.2 CHINESE

It is strongly recommended to install Wnn4.108. EGG system
bundled with Mule can communicate with cserver of cWnn and
provide you a very convenient Chinese (GB) inputting method.
See 'doc/EGG' for the usage of this system.
You can run Mule as a client of X window, or run it under
some Chinese terminal (including such emulators as cxterm and
exterm). In the latter case, you can use any inputting
methods supported by the terminal.

QUAIL system (bundled with Mule) also provides several
inputting methods for:
	GB: PINYIN, PINYIN_with_TONE, CCDOSPY, SW
	Big5: PINYIN, ETZY, ZOZY
See 'doc/QUAIL' for the usage of this system.

Subscribers of alt.chinese.text will find it very useful to
use GNUS (news reader written in Emacslisp) with hz2gb.el
(in 'contrib/lisp.tar.Z'). It encodes/decodes HZ/zW
encoding to/from Mule internal code automatically.

2.3 KOREAN

Korean inputting method is provided by QUAIL system (bundled
with Mule). See 'doc/QUAIL' for the usage of this system.
You can run Mule as a client of X window, or run it under
Hangul terminal or exterm.

2.4 EUROPEAN

Many kinds of European character inputting methods are
provided by QUAIL system (bundled with Mule). For the
moment, QUAIL provides inputting methods for:
	Latin1, Latin2,.. Latin5, Greek (ISO8859-7),
	Hebrew (ISO8859-8), Cyrillic (ISO8859-5)
See 'doc/QUAIL' for the usage of this system.
As for Hebrew, however, right-to-left writing is not yet
supported. Please wait for the next version.

2.5 THAI

By the new facility of dynamic character composition, we can
now provide Thai support based on TIS620 character set. The
inputting methods is also provided by QUAIL system (bundled
with Mule). See 'doc/QUAIL' for the usage of this system.
The name of quail-package for Thai is 'thai'. A free font
for TIS620 (12x29 dots) is also available in
'fonts/ETL.tar.Z'. To use the font with 12x24 ASCII font,
you should increase upper linespace by the command
x-set-linespace or command line argument of "-lsp". Specify
"5+" as the argument.

2.6 OTHER LANGUAGES

In the next version, we'll support Vietnamese. Arabic and
Devanagali are also in our target, but we don't know if we
can support them by the next version. We may need more
time.

3. SUPPORTED SYSTEMS

Basically, Mule runs on any systems (and machines) on which
GNU Emacs runs. In addition, several systems (including
MS-DOS) are supported. See etc/MACHINES.

4. INSTALLATION

To install Mule, see INSTALL.Mule.

5. DOCUMENTS

For the moment, we have the following documents.
'etc' directory contains:
FAQ (for original GNU Emacs in English)
FAQ.jp (for original GNU Emacs in Japanese)
	FAQ.Mule (for Mule in English)
	FAQ.Mule.jp (for Mule in Japanese)
emacs.1 (man file for original GNU Emacs in English)
mule.1 (man file for Mule in English)
'info' directory contains:
emacs (for original GNU Emacs in English)
	mule-jp (for Mule in Japanese)
	egg-jp (for EGG in Japanese)
	canna-jp (for CANNA in Japanese)
You may also find various documents under 'doc' directory.
Especially, please refer 'doc/TERMINOLOGY' if you find
unknown terms. Novice users may have to read 'doc/X11',
'doc/EGG', and 'doc/QUAIL'.

The file NEWFEATURE is also very important.

Since many of these documents (including this file) were
written by a non-native speaker of English (it's me), you
may find many curious expressions. Please correct them. In
addition, we are looking for volunteers who translate the
documents to Chinese, Korean, and the other langauges.

6. DISTRIBUTION

Mule is available by anonymous ftp from:

	etlport.etl.go.jp [192.31.197.99]:/pub/mule
		Manager: Ken'ichi HANDA <handa@etl.go.jp>
	sh.wide.ad.jp [133.4.11.11]:/JAPAN/mule/mule-0.9.7
		Manager: Akira KATO <kato@wide.sfc.keio.ac.jp>
	ftp.funet.fi [128.214.6.100]:/pub/gnu/emacs/mule
		Manager: Hannu Aronsson <haa@cs.hut.fi>

If you are accessing from out of Japan, please use the one
of the last two sites. For Europeans, the last site is
probably the best. Either ftp the complete tar file
(mule-0.9.7.tar.Z), *or* if you have an unmodified GNU Emacs
18.58 you can ftp just the patch file (diff-18.58-0.9.7.Z)
and apply that. If you find a patch with version number
higher than 0.9.7 (e.g. diff-0.9.7-0.9.7.1.Z), apply that
also.

These directories contain several other useful files such as
X's fonts and contributed softwares. See the file '00README'.

We are looking for ftp sites out of Japan. If you can
kindly provide this service, please send mail to
handa@etl.go.jp.

If you can't get Mule by ftp, please send request to
mule-request@etl.go.jp. We send you patches by mail.
Russian or Ukrainian sites may ask mail request to
	postmaster@ts.kiev.ua, or
	nib@ts.kiev.ua.

7. MAILING LIST

We are running two mailing lists:
	mule@etl.go.jp (main language: English)
	mule-jp@etl.go.jp (main language: Japanese)
All mails to mule@etl.go.jp are also sent to
mule-jp@etl.go.jp.

We ask everyone who gets Mule to join one of these
mailing-list. Please send requests of
subscribing/unsubscribing to:
	mule-request@etl.go.jp
saying which mailing list you want to join.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Note that you can use other languages than 'main' on both
lists. You can read/write any languages by Mule.

At last, we are deeply grateful to the current members of
mailing lists for their cooperation.

Ok. I will answer a more time this kind of questions.
I will try to write an article about this kind information later
when I can find the time.

While there have been many releases of Mac Chinese system from Apple,
Apple have never sold it up to this point.

The Mac Chinese OS v6.0.7 ( I assume you ask about Simplified
Chinese system here. The traditional system's situation is a little bit
different) was available in the CD for Develop magazine from Apple
in about the beginning of 1990's issues. This magazine is only
$10 for retail, $27 for a year's subscription. So it is almost free.
But the software was pulled out of CD after system 7 was released
( maybe earlier). So if your Mac can run system 6.0.7 and
you can find that CD, you have it.

The lastest issue (March or April) of the same CD has the developer seeding
release of Chinese Mac OS v7.1 lest many fonts that are included in the
real release.

These releases are mainly for developers to test their software, I believe.
So there is no any support for these softwares. And I am not sure
if you can use the OS v7.1 leagally for things other than testing
softwares. You should read the legal stuff with the CD first before you use
the CD.

Where do Mac Chinese OS software go? They are bundled with Macs selling
in China now.

Some people may ask if Apple will come out with a similar language pack
for Chinese like the Japanese language pack, I don't know. Apple will
anounce it if there is one and when it is available I guess.

Don't send E-Mail to me about this kind of information. I would not have
time for this kind of thing for a couple of weeks. When I have the time, I
will try to write an posting kind of like FAQ so that nobody need to ask.

To those who have no XLBR software but still want to view and print the
electronical version of "China Spring" and "IFCSS Newsletter" (Both are
availble at ifcss.org.) without the annoying XLBR formating commands
like "~{#\WV:E#(#4#)#\:ZLe#\VPPD~}":
You can download a pragram called rm4mat from ifcss.org. The program has
UNIX version (source code) and DOS version (executable file). You can find them under the directory:
/software/unix/chinese-utils and /software/dos/chinese-utils
respectively. The program was written by Chenghong Wang
(chwang@brahms.udel.edu).
The following are some of the comment lines of rm4mat.c.

/* Program name: rm4mat.c
Remove format codes in .gb files without changing anything else.
May need to edit the file for better look after removing the format codes.
   Usage: rm4mat file_name
   Output: file_name.new
